Scott Neeson receives honorary doctorate for Cambodian charity work

Cambodia news in English! Here you'll find all the breaking news from Cambodia translated into English for our international readership and expat community to read and comment on. The majority of our news stories are gathered from the local Khmer newspapers, but we also bring you newsworthy media from Cambodia before you read them anywhere else. Because of the huge population of the capital city, most articles are from Phnom Penh, but Siem Reap, Sihanoukville, and Kampot often make the headlines as well. We report on all arrests and deaths of foreigners in Cambodia, and the details often come from the Cambodian police or local Khmer journalists. As an ASEAN news outlet, we also publish regional news and events from our neighboring countries. We also share local Khmer news stories that you won't find in English anywhere else. If you're looking for a certain article, you may use our site's search feature to find it quickly.

Let me reiterate that I agree with the above. I'm not implying in any way that he's doing or has done anything wrong.

However, there does seem to be a double-standard here. There have been numerous threads about fathers walking down the street with their children and getting frowns. Meanwhile, here we have a man with what I'm assuming are strangers' kids and it's OK, presumably because he works for an NGO. I do think society has taken things a bit too far. It's a very fine line and I always feel I'm walking on a steel wire if I do anything that shows affection to a kid, so I tend to avoid them and don't have any physical contact with them. I don't think that's healthy for myself or children in general, especially if you're related (niece/nephew). The child's physical and mental well-being should always come first, but it seems difficult to find the balance for the non-predatory guys (who probably account for 98% of men?).

In Cambodia the days of sexual predators openly walking in the streets with child prostitutes is over. That's a good thing, right? I'm not talking about paranoia but people need to remain vigilant, especially when it comes to access to children - both their own and other people's children.

Precisely! And how many NGO workers have abused their position of trust by fiddling kids from their own NGO?

And let's not get started on his earnings...

Why must you always put the boot in. Intimating that many/a lot/most NGOs fiddle with kids?
Some who read your shit might believe you know what your talking about (??????)

And his earnings are his concern and not yours. Do any of us judge you on what you earn?

Yes, many have judged. Negatively. Wannabes who think that money maketh the man. Mostly dickheads from another forum, but forget that.

Not being negative to get reactions at all. I do think if people go into business to help others they shouldn't be getting huge salaries.

I agree that he's done some incredible work, but he's not the only one to have walked away from a previous life to do good works here - I can introduce you to many others that don't employ several PR people to make sure the world knows what a great humanitarian he is. I unfollowed him on FB because the constant stream of the greatness of the man was nauseating. I have relationships with people that have moved on from being on his PR team that also seem to have found it nauseating once the Hollywood glam wore off.

Also agree with your comments regarding men vs. predators - if you haven't already, watch The Red Pill.

this is why ngo's have boards of directors and publish accounts. if the remuneration is excessive it is exposed to public criticism which can easily result in funding changes.

unfortunately, orgs that run on donations usually have some PR attached- poverty porn is a fine line.

as for kids- yep, very sad the way things have changed where all men are suspect. if you visit a rural village you will have about 4 or 5 kids from age 3 to 8 wanting to hold your hand.

i am glad i do not have any goan kot kid because i would go nuts if subjected to some of the treatment dads have had when in public with their kids. i would lose any punch up too.
