Barangs (Including German Expat ACHIM ECKERT) in Fatal Motorbike Accident Near Independence Monument in Phnom Penh

Cambodia news in English! Here you'll find all the breaking news from Cambodia translated into English for our international readership and expat community to read and comment on. The majority of our news stories are gathered from the local Khmer newspapers, but we also bring you newsworthy media from Cambodia before you read them anywhere else. Because of the huge population of the capital city, most articles are from Phnom Penh, but Siem Reap, Sihanoukville, and Kampot often make the headlines as well. We report on all arrests and deaths of foreigners in Cambodia, and the details often come from the Cambodian police or local Khmer journalists. As an ASEAN news outlet, we also publish regional news and events from our neighboring countries. We also share local Khmer news stories that you won't find in English anywhere else. If you're looking for a certain article, you may use our site's search feature to find it quickly.

And I knew the identified man. Damn.
Sorry for you. Every time there are accident victims or foreign deaths posted online here I am constantly wondering if I know them. You never know.
Condolences to family and friends of all concerned.

I also knew Achim. Hell, I've even survived a roundhouse kick to the head from him at Sharky's Bar once upon a time. Granted I had a helmet on and literally asked for it. It was Captain Bonez's helmet, actually, which is how I met him. He doesn't seem like it in the pics from the accident, but Achim is a huge guy.

And he was no stranger to riding big bikes, as he's been riding all over Cambodia and Vietnam for well over a decade, and his main business was buying and selling big bikes.

He leaves behind 2 children in Cambodia and I know he will be missed by many.

RIP.

I only read about blaming the speeding barangs but if it happened at dawn with a gymnast I always thought that score of them are puting themself in great danger by exercising on the roads, oblivious to traffic. That is especially the case in SHV where some can be found walking in the big Ekareach blind curve and where most of traffic at this time is probably DUI.
If that is the case, personally I would put the blame on the lack of proper parks.

They are not exercising on the road. This person crossed the road to get to that space in the middle like a lot of us do in the morning.
Its beautil there.
To blame the pedestrian here is so low. You can see these wankers there going at high speed quite often and I hope they do something about it. But I highly doubt it.

I saw a video with them wrapping the body of the khmer gentleman with cling wrap film. Is this a standard practice here? From the video footage they didn't do this to the two barang gentleman. Does anybody know why they did this?
R.i.p to all the victims of this sad accident.
