West African Expat TIHA RENÉ ANDERSON Needs Your Money To Get Out of Prison in Bangkok & Leave Thailand

Thailand is Cambodia's neighbor to the West, and this forum is dedicated to Thai news, stories, reviews, blogs, videos, Thai people and anything else related to the country. A lot of expats have both lived and worked in Cambodia and Thailand, and this area is a place to discuss all aspects of life in Thailand and what's going on there. Most topics are about Bangkok and Pattaya because of their larger populations of expatriates and tourists in those cities, but this is for all things Thai.

West African Expat TIHA RENÉ ANDERSON Needs Your Money To Get Out of Prison in Bangkok & Leave Thailand

Post by General Mackevili » Sun Nov 05, 2017 5:27 pm

Being shared around the internet, and some people are naturally skeptical, as it involves West Africa and requests for money:

"Please help this young man from Ivory Coast return home from Bangkok where he's been held in Thailand's notorious Immigration Detention Center (essentially an overcrowded prison) for more than a year. All he needs to get home is a plane ticket. My wife, Karine Pouget, is trying to help him raise the funds to get home. Once she raises the money, she'll buy the ticket direct for his return home. If you can donate a few dollars (or more) it would be a huge help.""

And yes, of course there's a GoFundMe/Crowd sourcing campaign in action, and they've already raised about $650 of $1,500 for him:

"What are we asking for ?

As a voluntary group, we are turning to our friends, to all of you who will be touched by the situtation of Tiha René Anderson. This 28 year old young man and all of those who worked hand in hand for him need your help. We are trying to help him out of immigration detention in Thailand and back to Ivory Coast, his home country. He is dreaming only of returning home to try to start over and rebuild himself.

At this stage of our project, we need help from each and everyone of you. Every donation, even a small one, is important. We are hoping to buy a one-way airplane ticket.

Who is Rene ?

René came to Thailand to start a football career. Unfortunately, it did not work out as planned and once his visa expired after a month in Thailand, he did not have enough money to pay for his return ticket. Completely unaware of the circumstances and consequences, he overstayed his visa and was arrested by the Thai authorities after a routine identity check. He is now considered an « illegal immigrant » and has been detained for more than a year by the immigration services in Bangkok, since Septembre 2016.

Rene is free to leave the country at anytime- the price of his freedom is only on a plane ticket, that he has to pay for.

Rene’s capacity for hope and optimism has impressed all of us. He does not possess anything, has no family able to help him, and is relying on our help and support. He keeps smilling hoping to come out of jail, to recover from this traumatic experience,

How much funding do we need ?

Ideally, we need around $1,500. That would include the one way plane ticket, the car to drive him to the airport and a little cash to eat and drink during the trip. We are able to provide him with a suitcase and some clothes.

Any additional money will be given to the « Pole Caritatif of Bangkok Accueil », a French association with deep knowledge of the country that has been supporting vulnerable families and individuals across Bangkok for decades.

Furthermore we commit ourselves to informing anyone interested in knowing how the money is or has been used, with detailed receipts and explanations.

Thanks in advance for your donation. Please know that every little bit will help.

A few more details on our volunteer work at the Immigration Detention Center :

You can visit an inmate any weekday morning. Inmates meet with volunteers to get out of their crowded cell, talk, and find help for basic necessities. The living conditions in their cells are terrible ; they take turns sleeping because there is not enough space for them all to lie down. We bring him healthy food (fresh fruit, protein, a few sweet treats) to make sure that at least once a week he is able to eat a full meal.

Because I lived in Guinea, and know and love West Africa, I asked to meet Rene. He is hoping to end his incarceration and go back to his country. Despite the harsh living conditions, he continues to keep his big, bright smile."

I looked at flights from BKK to Abidjan. Less than 500 to go via Munich. Just over 600 to go via Mumbai.

Total bullshit. Anyway, who in their right mind would give up a cozy lockup in Thailand for a West African toilet? Seems to me he has a leg up on 98% of his countrymen.
