Water taxi service for Phnom Penh by April

Cambodia news in English! Here you'll find all the breaking news from Cambodia translated into English for our international readership and expat community to read and comment on. The majority of our news stories are gathered from the local Khmer newspapers, but we also bring you newsworthy media from Cambodia before you read them anywhere else. Because of the huge population of the capital city, most articles are from Phnom Penh, but Siem Reap, Sihanoukville, and Kampot often make the headlines as well. We report on all arrests and deaths of foreigners in Cambodia, and the details often come from the Cambodian police or local Khmer journalists. As an ASEAN news outlet, we also publish regional news and events from our neighboring countries. We also share local Khmer news stories that you won't find in English anywhere else. If you're looking for a certain article, you may use our site's search feature to find it quickly.

I finally got around to trying the boat from the Night Market to Prek Phnov.

Turned up at the ticket booth at 4.15pm which was unmanned. Eventually someone turned up and told us that two out of the three boats were broken and the 4.30 boat was cancelled.

If you can find a boat, the ferry service is free for the next two weeks at least.

Free rides on ferry extended
11 December 2018
The public ferry operating on Tonle Sap and Tonle Bassac rivers between Phnom Penh and Takhmao town will continue to be a free service until the end of 2018, with a decision yet to be made on 2019, a Phnom Penh city spokesperson confirmed.

“The free service for the ferry will continue up to the end of the year. The municipal will then make a decision on whether to continue to provide the free service or not for next year,” Meth Meas Pheakdey said.

The free public ferry operates between 6am and 6pm along the Tonle Sap and Tonle Bassac rivers, making four stops in Phnom Penh, with the final stop in Kandal province’s Takhmao town.

And this morning I want to take the two girls home to Takhmau at 9 am. But the next boat goes at 11 am. Again, not hanging around for 2 hours so it's the bus again and we are there by 10 am
Cannot see this water taxi service being successful in the future if it has to compete with busses

It looks like they are running the minimum service to keep the (Japanese?) donor money flowing. It’s a shame as something like the Bangkok water taxis would be a nice way to get around town.

I took the trip from Night Market to Ta Khmao the other day. There is no 11am now, just 11.30am - and I was the only passenger. And the return one didn't depart Ta Khmao at 4pm but rather 4.30pm. Its only real use is for people who commute for work, it would seem. A fellow passenger on the return trip thinks it's great, 30 mins by boat instead of 1-1.5 hours on the bus. Surprised it's not more popular in that regard.

Pro tip: there is one life jacket per two seats, so if it's busy sit next to a small, weak person or child so you can wrestle it off them if needed.

Here's a very positive write-up on water taxi travel, together with the (projected) time table:
Phnom Penh’s water taxi (isn’t it wonderful?)
Posted on January 25, 2019 by Pete Ford

Phnom Penh’s greatest tourist attraction may be its least expected — the new commuter-focused water taxi linking Takhmao in the city’s south to the main riverside area and further north along the Tonle Sap River...

Current timetable:

They were supposed to have started charging for it now, but no mention of the price, and the booth was unstaffed when I took this pic, so maybe it's still free?

The water taxi service has just started paying tickets which cost 2000 riel.

March 27, 2019
Free water taxi service ends
City Hall yesterday announced an end to the free trial period for water taxis, which will now charge $0.50 per trip.

The service, which was launched recently, was free of charge until Monday.

The water taxis run from Prek Pnov area, in the northern part of Phnom Penh, to Takhmao city in Kandal province. There are four boats that operate from 5.30am to 6.30pm. Stops along the way are Russey Keo port, Old Market, Chaktomuk, Chbar Ampov and Takhmao.

Phnom Penh Governor Khuong Sreng said in a statement that the service was launched last year in order to reduce traffic jams in the city. It was free for about a year, and now Mr Sreng said everyone must pay.

“Monks, the disabled, students, older people, workers and civil servants will not be charged,” he said.
