Finnish BegPacker Needs Your Help in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam

Post by General Mackevili »

Spotted in several districts, with a sign saying he was robbed and needs your financial help to get to his embassy in Hanoi.

How do you know he's a BegPacker? Although, I guess by definition - if you're backpacking, get robbed and start begging, you become a 'BegPacker'.

His story could be legit. Getting robbed in VN is quite plausible. 8-)

However, having your passport, wallet AND phone stolen is overdoing it a bit. :chin:
I'd definitely ask for some details regarding how it happened before handing over any cash. If he has a good story, I'd give him the benefit of the doubt and contribute a couple 100k vnd notes.

I must have golden horseshoes shoved where the sun don't shine because I'm 61, have been to 48 countries (plus Antarctica), once walked through a favela in Rio alone & drunk at 2:00 AM and have never been robbed (except by Thai Immigration officers).

Is he hitch-hiking ? He doesn't actually ask for money. Need to get to Ha Noi urgently. Need to use someone's phone to call the embassy. I don't think its really begpacking - he's not asking for a ticket to Bali. Desperate times, desperate measures. I give him a pass here.

If you get robbed of everything in a country where you know no one, what are you supposed to do with no phone, no money and no papers ? So many scammers now, do travelers still help each other ?

And who took the photo ? Did they just gawk, snap it, and leave him there ? :o
