National Bank of Cambodia Releases New 5000 and 1000 riel bills

Local news outlets reported that the National Bank of Cambodia just recently released the new bills of 5000 and 1000 riel on Wednesday. The release of the new bills is to congratulate king Sihamoni on his on coronation day. The new bills are seen to be adorned with the portraits of the former king Norodom Sihanouk.

They look great, I just wish they'd put some larger denomination bills out there. I rarely see anything larger than a 10,000 Riel, 20,000 aren't too uncommon but I've only once had a 100,000 Riel note. That's only about $25 for anyone who isn't aware of the exchange rate.

Indeed, for all the talk of dedolarizing the economy, having mostly small notes only helps perpetuate the Mickey Mouse status of the Riel in most consumers' minds.

They should probably have moved to polymer notes especially given there are no coins (I'm assuming they're not; they don't look like they are).

At least the 5000 and 2000 won't look so similar any more.
