Where are all the Dogs and Cats?

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! We also have some Khmer members here as well, but English is the main language used on CEO. You're welcome to have a look around, and if you decide you want to participate, you can become a part our international expat community by signing up for a free account.

Where are all the Dogs and Cats?

Post by Ronny »

Been in Phnom Penh for a little over 2 weeks now and I swear I've seen no more than 3 dogs and about 3 cats since I've been here. What's up with that? In Thailand, dogs and cats- especially cats, are all over the place, but here, almost ziltch.

No they're not! They'll steal anything that's not nailed down, and half the things that are.

Plenty of dogs and cats. Go running at 5am with a head light and you will be amazed at the number of cats. Plenty of dogs too but locked away to avoid them being stolen/poisoned.

Not just that, stay away from macaque monkeys as they carry the nasty Herpes B virus, which has an 80% fatality rate in humans, and can be spread by saliva or bite/scratch.

Plenty of well fed cats in my alley way. The neighbours feed and look after them. They lounge around and watch the rats. PPAWS offers free desexing for cats and dogs on Mondays. I have printed up their Khmer flyer for the neighbours but I doubt they will bother. One of the neighbours' cats had a litter of five kittens recently but they were all sick (cat flu?) and died.

As for the numbers of dogs and cats, in PP and elsewhere, it goes in cycles. There are more of each right after the birthing cycles up to 6 months of age but due to high mortality, mostly to disease, but cars and human appetites or poisoning has an affect, they die off and the cycle repeats. There are some vet clinics now that provide vaccines and birth control surgery but most locals would never cut their dog's balls off.

Dog bites are the biggest factor for human rabies. 500-600 people a year still die from rabies in Cambodia. One of the highest per capita in the world. More than 60% are children. Problem is many here do not know the consequences (rabies) of a dog bite so no follow-up besides kicking the shit out of the dog.

Monkeys are very low risk for rabies but carry lots of other viruses. A stated previously, Herpes B virus is prevalent and risky in these animals but human cases are fortunately still rare. Only 5-7 kg but they are stronger than you, faster than you, and bite very hard.
