Cambodia news in English! Here you'll find all the breaking news from Cambodia translated into English for our international readership and expat community to read and comment on. The majority of our news stories are gathered from the local Khmer newspapers, but we also bring you newsworthy media from Cambodia before you read them anywhere else. Because of the huge population of the capital city, most articles are from Phnom Penh, but Siem Reap, Sihanoukville, and Kampot often make the headlines as well. We report on all arrests and deaths of foreigners in Cambodia, and the details often come from the Cambodian police or local Khmer journalists. As an ASEAN news outlet, we also publish regional news and events from our neighboring countries. We also share local Khmer news stories that you won't find in English anywhere else. If you're looking for a certain article, you may use our site's search feature to find it quickly.

The sad decline of Oum Kunthea, bright star of the 90's

Post by CEOCambodiaNews »

24 October 2017, Phnom Penh.
Oum Kunthea was a successful singer in the 90s and a number one star in Cambodia in 1999. She was known throughout Cambodia for her sexy provocative appearance.

After the turn of the century, Oum Kunthea's luck changed, and there were reports over the years that the former star was living in poverty and that she was suffering from health problems.
Image
Finally, yesterday the ex-glamour queen was arrested at a sordid underground gaming room on Street 273, in Toul Sangke district, Russey Keo district, Phnom Penh.
Image
She is suspected of possible drug use and she has been taken away for questioning by police.

Sad symbolism to see the bright star of the 90's on her knees in the mud.

A current star gave her a chance just 2 weeks ago to return to the limelight. She was featured singing on one of the TV concerts. Guess thats not gonna pan out.

If only the cops had gone another level further down, they'd have found The Third Man's dungeon.

To be fair the earlier pictures are almost twenty years ago and she looks cleanly dressed, she just doesn't appear to be wearing any makeup. Are there any better photos? What kind of "games" do they play in these bunkers? Chasing the dragon?
Silence, exile, and cunning.

Not 'better' photos, but more explicit.

Some of the news outlets mentioned drugs, and others said nothing, but I think the photos speak for themselves. There are also hints of a serious longterm incurable illness. Whatever the reason, very sad to see.

This is from another news outlet half an hour ago. Think they mean to say that she was just picked up for being in the wrong place at the wrong time. No harm no foul.
Unfortunately it's a bit late for her now with her photo on the front page of all the Khmer news.

Basic translation from Khmerload:
"Congratulations: Police have released Ouk Kunthea singer this afternoon !!" he said.

The authorities have confirmed that Ms. Oum Kunthea was not involved in the drug use case when she was nearby, making it a mistake to inquire about whether the cops were released.

After the cops released, and hope that Ms. Ouk Kunthea will stop picking up drugs near the drug players, because her home in Sen Sok, do not go to Russey Keo district far from home, pity her. "

The message clearly states that this arrest is just a misunderstanding, but Ms. Oun Kunthea has no involvement with the drug.
