Training Cambodia's teachers

Post by CEOCambodiaNews »

A private organization has taken up the challenge of improving the quality of teachers in Cambodia in order to raise the standards of education in the kingdom.

‘Teach for Cambodia’ launches

Monirath Siv first saw the urgent need for a pipeline of qualified and committed teachers in Cambodia when he became aware of a “learning crisis” that could impact the country’s development, especially given its disproportionately young population.

Now, after three years of planning, that pipeline is set to open following the Friday launch of Siv’s independent organisation, Teach for Cambodia, which aims to train teachers to become future educational leaders. “Primary and secondary education is high-stakes,” he said.

As Siv sees it, the crisis stems from various contributing factors, such as socioeconomic challenges, a persistent teacher shortage, substandard teaching quality and poor school leadership.

And unlike Singapore, which Siv says has shown commitment to making education a priority, Cambodia is not sending its brightest into the education sector. It’s estimated that more than 75,000 teachers have qualifications that fall short of a bachelor’s degree equivalency, according to the ministry’s Teacher Policy Action Plan. And more than 80 percent of teacher trainees have a grade-12 exam score of D or E – barely passing...

That's fantastic. That extra $50 a month might attract a few "C" students into the teaching profession. The future is looking bright for Cambodian kids.

That is a great plan if Cambodia government execute the plan then there will be a drastic change in the educational sector. The student needs proper educational system where they get the knowledge which they can use in the real world. A teacher should be someone who should be the role model if the teacher is not qualified then think of the student where they will be when they pass out.

Obviously this is a concern.

Training local teachers to better standards can only be a good thing. But why is it always up to NGOs ?

In getting teachers to pass exams before they became ''qualified '' teacher, I think the problem still would not be solved in the short term. But the fact is many people are not qualified to even have kids, let alone be of any help in educating them. The problem of education and teacher supply starts way back when those teachers themselves were kids. Being raised in substandard housing conditions with no-one to tell them right from wrong and no-one to give them motivation talks does not help . Some people become teacher only because their friend is a teacher or they dont know what other study course to do. You will have to admit not everyone has that special gift inside them to become a good teacher and if you still haven't learnt the basic hygiene standards and cleanliness in your own home how can one hand on those everyday skills on to the kids.

I always say the best teacher is always the parents ,,,,, but there are a lot of bad parents out there.
