Tuktuk drivers attack taxi driver at Phnom Penh International Airport

Post by CEOCambodiaNews »

13 October 2017
PHNOM PENH - A violent attack on a taxi driver occurred yesterday at 8:10am at Phnom Penh International Airport when four tuktuk drivers took exception to a taxi driver parking in their space.
The victim, Cheav Savattha, 34, a freelance taxi driver, was parked outside the airport waiting for a customer from the airport when the tuktuk drivers asked him to move. When he refused to leave, the argument became heated and eventually turned to blows. Astonished bystanders called the police who arrested all the individuals involved and took them away for questioning.

"freelance taxi driver" = PassApp/Uber etc presumably. Not surprised they would get pissed off.

In order to operate a tuk tuk business from within the airport grounds the owner must buy a concession which lasts for the life of the airport and gives them exclusive rights to pick up passengers the concession costs around $2000 USD and they are often bought and sold as there is a finite number of concessions. There is some leeway for people coming to pick up family etc in a tuk tuk but I guess there are some sort of unspoken rules. Many tuk tuk drivers rent the concession from the owner in order to operate there so I can see why they would get pissed off at a uber pick up. Anyone can buy one of these concessions and i have thought about buying one for the wife to control as you can make good earning a month renting them out.
