Cambodia bans Hollywood film ‘Kingsman: Golden Circle’

Post by CEOCambodiaNews »

12 October 2017
- The Cambodian Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts has banned the Hollywood blockbuster sequel ‘Kingsman: Golden Circle’ from local cinemas because one of the film's villains hides in a Cambodian temple, local media reported Thursday.

The blockbuster, which tells a fictional story of a British spy agency which teams up with its US counterpart to track a drug lord based in Cambodia was to open in local cinemas last week.

Many of the movie's skirmishes with the film's villainess, played by Julianne Moore, take place in a temple situated in the heart of the Cambodian jungle.

The Ministry of Culture cited the resemblance of the temple in the movie to the Ta Prohm temple, which can be found in the world famous Angkor Wat temple complex.

Bok Borak, deputy director of the Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts, said the ministry took issue with portraying Cambodia as a destination country for criminals, according to local media reports.

And yet in Tomb Raider they were happy to show the villain destroying part of a temple in order to gain access to a secret tomb.

Cambodia bans Hollywood blockbuster ‘Kingsman: Golden Circle’
12 October 2017
Simon Choo, the distribution director at Westec Media, which purchased the distribution rights for the film in Cambodia told dpa he was “disappointed’’ with the ministry’s decision.

“For me, I think, Kingsman meant no harm to any country. It is just a form of entertainment,’’ he said.
“If this is a reason to ban any movies, I think there will be a drop in people coming to shoot movies in Angkor What[sic],’’ Choo said.

The film wasn't even shot in Cambodia. What is 'unacceptable' here is linking the name 'Cambodia' to international crime. They may have a point.
Bok Borak, director of the Cambodian culture ministry’s film department, said the “unacceptable” movie had been banned from cinemas for “using the name Cambodia as a hideout for criminals”.

“And what is more worrying is that it uses one of our temples as a place to produce drugs, to kill people cruelly … So we don’t allow the screening of this film in our country,” he added.

He said the movie was not filmed in Cambodia but the drug lord’s temple resembled the well-known Ta Prohm...

No one in the elite group received any "input" .

Drawing a pretty long bow to match the movie set to a particular location here in Cambodia. Could be any Asian location but someone wrote Cambodia in the script so its a slur on Cambodia.

As the elite are all law abiding members of a great democratic non nepotistic non aligned political party I can understand why they are so incensed ..
