Whats open and closed in Bangkok this month
The end of October will see the royal funeral and cremation of His Majesty the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej, who died last year.
The Royal funeral is scheduled from October 25-27, with the Royal cremation taking place on October 26.
October 25-27 is when there will be most disruption to events, public transportation, entertainment and other activities.
Some shops, cinemas and tourist attractions will also be closed on these dates.
While the authorities have asked for entertainment to be toned down as a mark of respect [no loud music and outdoor festivals], contrary to reports in international media, many tourist attractions, bars and restaurants will remain open for most of October.
For tourists and expats, disruption will remain minimal, apart from between October 25-27.
Alcohol ban
At the time of writing there’s been little information regarding a ban on alcohol sales, although you should perhaps expect alcohol to be banned on October 26, as this is an official holiday, and maybe even October 25 and 27.
October 13 marks the first anniversary of the death of HM King Bhumibol Adulyadej and is also an official holiday.
While officially there might not be an outright alcohol ban in place, many bars or entertainment venues may decide simply to not open. Thaivisa spoke to bar owners in Pattaya and Hua Hin who told us that while they had not received any official information they had decided to close Oct 25-27.
Bars and clubs in Soi Cowboy, for example, will be closed from October 25 to 27.
We’ll update this post with news of any alcohol bans and bar closures.
Immigration offices
Immigration and other government offices will be closed on October 23 due to it being Chulalongkorn Day, an annual national holiday which marks the anniversary of the death of King Chulalongkorn.
Immigration offices will also be closed on October 26.
Shopping malls, shops and other businesses
There has been no news to say otherwise so you can expect all major shopping malls to remain open as normal during the royal funeral.
You might find that individual shops decide to close, but the for the most part it will be business as usual at the likes of Central shopping mall, Robinson’s department stores and Villa Market. We’ll let you know if we hear of any change.
The only confirmed closures are at Tesco Lotus which announced that all stores nationwide will be closing at 2pm on October 26.
Major Cineplex will also close all theatres nationwide on October 26, as will all branches of B-Quick mechanics.
Banks are also likely to close on October 26, although perhaps check with your local branch for confirmation.
All of the above are due to reopen on October 27.
Tourist attractions
In September it was announced the Grand Palace would be closed from Oct 1-29, reopening to the public on October 30.
Other popular tourist attractions that have announced they will close on October 26 include Tiffany’s Show in Pattaya, Dream World and Safari World in Bangkok and TK Park located in Central World.
For a comprehensive list of tourist attractions closed on October 26, take a look at Richard Barrow’s blog.
Transportation
A number roads in Bangkok will be closed from Oct 25-28 during the royal cremation.
These include: Charoen Krung, Chetupon, Kalayana Maitri, Lak Muang, Maha Rat, Na Phra Lan, Na Phra That, Phra Athit, Phra Chan, Phraya Petch, Phra Pipit, Rajini, Ratchadamnoen Avenue, Saranrom, Setthakan and Thaiwang.
All buses, trains and taxis will operate as normal. The BTS and MRT network will operate as normal and will be free for all passenger on October 26.
The Airport Rail Link and Purple Line will also be free from October 25-27.

Re: Whats open and closed in Bangkok this month
Thai mourning period starts today, and will be extended until 29 October.
Thailand extends mourning period for two more days, all banks closed on cremation day
- Thailand has extended the mourning period for the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej for two more days, until Oct. 29, according to an announcement from the prime minister’s office yesterday.
The royal funeral is scheduled for Oct. 25-29, so the cabinet has decided to extend the mourning period. The official mourning dates have been changed from Oct. 13-27 to Oct. 13-29, a total of 17 days.
The Thai flag will be flown at half-mast, and government workers will wear black through the end of the period. All mourning signs and banners will be removed on the night of Oct. 29.
The Bank of Thailand also announced this week that all banks will be closed on Oct. 26, the date for the cremation, which has been declared a national holiday this year.

Re: Whats open and closed in Bangkok this month
Yup. I agree. A lot more shopping places, as well as bars and clubs. Maybe for 2-3 days, too, because I can't imagine operators will be able fully staff their businesses during the mourning weekend. Then again, I and many others were wrong about the fallout after the death a year ago.phuketrichard wrote: ↑Mon Oct 16, 2017 8:19 pm As well as all central shopping malls at 3 pm.
