Famous Cambodian Architect VANN MOLYVANN Dies in Siem Reap
Re: Famous Cambodian Architect VANN MOLYVANN Dies in Siem Reap
^ There should be a plaque on that monument saying : "Wait. Remind me. Who were we victorious over again?"

There is also the National Bank of Cambodia in SHV down near Queenco, which is a beautiful Art Deco building.
There are very few if any Art Deco villas in Kep, and Sihanoukville was a tiny coastal fishing village during that period so it's highly unlikely there were ever any Art Deco buildings there. Nearly all those destroyed villas in Kep were built post-independence and designed by modernist architects such as the esteemed Vann Molvann.

Whatever. They are still important and need to be saved no matter what period they are from.John Bingham wrote: ↑Thu Oct 19, 2017 12:30 ambangkokhooker wrote: ↑Mon Oct 09, 2017 7:55 pm I hope they save those Art Deco villas in Kep. There is a few orgs that are trying.

The man who built Cambodia
Raksmey Hong | Publication date 06 May 2019 | 11:23 ICT
The work of legendary architect Vann Molyvann is being displayed at Siem Reap town’s Treeline Urban Resort to honour the “man who built Cambodia”.
The exhibition, named Learning From the Past: The Vann Molyvann Project, opened on April 7 and is set to run until June 30. It is being hosted in collaboration with the Vann Molyvann Project – an organisation that celebrates the legendary architect’s work.
Vann Molyvann’s projects include Phnom Penh’s National Olympic Stadium, the Bassac Riverfront Project, the Institute of Foreign Languages, the Preah Suramarit National Theatre and the Cambrew Brewery.
The theme of the exhibition focuses on Molyvann’s construction techniques, namely “the specific elements of a really Khmer ecological architecture” and using modern building materials. Molyvann’s buildings worked in harmony with the environment through their incorporation of water, natural light and ventilation, inspiring younger generations of architects to meet the demands of context, climate and culture.
Chhin Chhon Visothm, a Treeline staff member who accompanies visitors through the exhibition, tells The Post that the exhibition has been visited by both foreigners and locals, many of whom are architects and artists.
“In his age, Molyvann’s architecture was considered revolutionary. He based his designs on ventilation, water and light working in harmony with structure. He designed buildings to have holes allowing for air to blow in and out and natural light to pass through. Beneath the structures he also had drainage systems to support the buildings during the dry season,” he says.

This week marks two years since the death of Cambodia’s most prolific architect, Vann Molyvann. Southeast Asia Globe explores the monuments left behind by this legend of the Kingdom's New Khmer Architecture movement
WHY WE WROTE THIS: Because Vann Molyvann's work changed the face of Cambodia.

The sun is beginning to sink into the early evening as our young tour guide thanks the group for having followed his lead through three 1960s Khmer New Architecture sites. An architect himself, Hor Daro views the work of renowned late Cambodian architect Vann Molyvann as inspiration for his own work: the unique angles found in the structures; the sparse use of columns to support entire floors of buildings; his innovative approaches to natural ventilation. Molyvann’s work is also an important piece of his country’s history, Daro tells us, and will be preserved properly only if its importance is spread to locals and tourists alike – a primary goal of Khmer Architecture Tours in Phnom Penh.

I went by his house yesterday and noticed the office furniture display was gone and it had been cleaned up. It's an interesting building but $7 million? At that sort of price it's just going to be demolished for a tower block. 9

My money is on it getting demolished or heavily repurposed.Anchor Moy wrote: ↑Sat May 23, 2020 2:26 pm Would they dare ? Vann Molyvann is a national treasure after all.

In my view Cambodians are not a very sentimental people...........
........for the most part, once you get past Angkor Wat and that whole epoch......after that, they don't really care.....it's onward and upward and what ever will fill their pockets with luey the fastest.
