In my head there's this nasty voice telling me health centers might have refused malaria patients during the last six months because of their scare of covid, thus not counting.

I hate that voice. I love green pastures.

^ Sick people might also be scared to go to clinics in case they get locked up in quarantine.
Especially if they have a fever.

I agree its strange malaria cases seem to have dropped during wuflu. Malaria is forever. Relapses are common. They can easily be confused with wuflu symptoms. A fever and a slight cough can be signs of a relapse. Usually only lasting a few days. I dont need no doctor.
I have lived with malaria since 1988. 😎

You're lucky, Malaria is deadlier than the wuflu. A healthy guy I knew in his late twenties caught dengue and malaria at the same time. Didn't last long before he was gone. If one suspects malaria seek medical help and try to find out which strain you have. Some are more potent than others.

Good news! The number of malaria cases in Cambodia is in steady decline.

7 Jan 2022
The Malaria Centre yesterday disclosed that there were only 3,504 malaria cases last year, a 60% decrease compared to the 8,222 in 2020.
Khmer Times
On 21 April, WHO published a new report highlighting successes and lessons learned among
the “E-2020” group of malaria-eliminating countries. Despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, a number of these countries reported zero indigenous malaria cases in 2020, while others made impressive progress in their journey to becoming malaria-free.

In the face of a dual threat of antimalarial drug resistance and COVID-19, countries of the Greater Mekong subregion have also made major strides towards their shared goal of elimination by 2030. In the 6 countries of the subregion, the reported number of malaria cases fell by 97% between 2000 and 2020. Malaria deaths were reduced by more than 99% in the same period of time.
Ahead of World Malaria Day, country leaders, frontline health workers and global partners came together in a virtual forum held on 21 April to share experiences and reflections on efforts to reach the target of zero malaria. The event was co-hosted by WHO and the RBM Partnership to End Malaria.

Ministry, WHO Renew Commitment to Fight Malaria
AKP Phnom Penh, March 03, 2022 --

The Ministry of Health and the World Health Organisation (WHO) have renewed their commitment in fighting malaria in Cambodia.

The commitment was stressed during a meeting at the ministry on Mar. 2 between H.E. Dr. Or Vandine, Cambodian Health Secretary of State and Mr. Dr. Pedro Alonso, Director of WHO Global Malaria Programme.

According to H.E. Dr. Or Vandine, during the last ten years, from 2011 to 2021, Cambodia's malaria death rate dropped significantly and the country recorded no death since 2018.

Cambodia had achieved the goal three years ahead of the targeted timing, and is working hard through comprehensive partnership to achieve the zero-malaria aim in the country by 2025.

Cambodia's malaria cases down 6 pct last year
Source: Xinhua
2023-01-04 16:55:01

PHNOM PENH, Jan. 4 (Xinhua) -- Cambodia recorded 4,042 cases of malaria in 2022, a decrease of 6 percent from 4,318 cases in 2021, a health official said on Wednesday.

"Of the reported cases, there had been no deaths," Huy Rekol, director of the National Center for Parasitology, Entomology and Malaria Control, told Xinhua.

Cambodia has recorded no malaria death since 2018, which made the Southeast Asian nation hailed as a successful country in eliminating malaria deaths three years earlier than its target, he said.

Rekol attributed the drop in malaria cases to people's better surveillance response, awareness, adequate equipment such as malaria testing devices, insecticide-treated mosquito nets, and anti-malarial drugs.

The official said malaria diagnostic tests and treatment are very effective and that Artesunate-Mefloquine, a medication used to treat malaria, which is also known as ASMQ, is 100 percent safe and efficacious against malaria.

"We hope that Cambodia will be able to eliminate malaria cases by 2025 because year after year, the number of malaria cases has dropped steadily," he said.

PM Calls on Continued Effort to Meet Zero-Malaria Target in 2025
AKP Phnom Penh, April 25, 2023 --

With Cambodia's noticeable antimalaria achievements, Cambodian Prime Minister called on continued collective effort to meet zero-malaria target by 2025.

Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo HE made the call in his open letter to cheer the April 25 World Malaria Day released recently.

According to the Prime Minister, the Royal Government of Cambodia developed the National Strategic Plan for Elimination of Malaria 2011-2025 well aligned with the sustainable development goal framework toward 2023.

With that, he added, Cambodia put an end to antimalarial drug resistance in 2016 and ensure no death case of the disease since 2018 until now.

Malaria cases dropped from an average of over 110,000 (with around 500 deaths) in the decade before 2011 to 4,041 infection cases in 2022.

The latest on the combat against malaria from the WHO:
WHO urges increased implementation of recommended tools to combat malaria
25 April 2023 News release

Marking World Malaria Day, the World Health Organization (WHO) is issuing a call for increased implementation of new and existing interventions to save lives from malaria. Nearly 1.5 million children at high risk of illness and death from malaria in Ghana, Kenya and Malawi have now received their first dose of the first malaria vaccine, RTS,S/AS01 (RTS,S), thanks to an ongoing pilot programme coordinated by WHO.

The malaria vaccine pilots, launched in 2019, are increasing equity in access to malaria prevention for the most vulnerable and are saving lives. If implemented broadly, WHO estimates that malaria vaccines could save the lives of tens of thousands of children each year.

“We have the tools to drive down malaria, a package of interventions that includes vector control, preventive medicines, testing, and treatment,” said Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General of WHO. “These are joined by a safe and effective malaria vaccine, which could save the lives of tens of thousands children every year. With sustained investment and scaled-up efforts to reach those most at risk, malaria elimination in many countries is in reach."

World Malaria Day 2023 is being marked under the theme “Time to deliver zero malaria: invest, innovate, implement”. Within this theme, WHO is urging more effective implementation of available tools and strategies to prevent, diagnose and treat malaria, particularly among marginalized populations.

According to the latest World malaria report, published in December 2022, there were an estimated 247 million new cases of malaria in 2021. The WHO African Region continues to shoulder the heaviest burden of the disease – accounting for an estimated 95% of all malaria cases (234 million) and 96% of all deaths (593 000) in 2021. Nearly 80% of malaria deaths in the African Region were among children under the age of five.
New strategies and tools

Countries have made some progress in expanding access to malaria services for most-at-risk populations. Despite some progress, many people at high risk of malaria still lack access to services that can prevent, detect and treat the disease. Challenges in expanding access to malaria services have been compounded, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa, by the COVID-19 pandemic, converging humanitarian crises, restricted funding, weak surveillance systems, and declines in the effectiveness of core malaria-fighting tools.

To address these threats and support countries in building more resilient malaria programmes, WHO recently published new strategies and frameworks, including:

a new strategy to contain antimalarial drug resistance in Africa;
a new initiative to stop the spread of Anopheles stephensi in urban environments;
a new framework, developed jointly by WHO and UN-Habitat, to guide city leaders in urban malaria control.
a new toolkit to help countries assess their malaria surveillance systems and identify areas for investment

WHO has also increased the transparency, flexibility and access to its malaria recommendations. The consolidated WHO Guidelines for malaria are now available through two digital platforms: MAGICapp and the “Malaria Toolkit” app. WHO encourages countries to tailor the recommendations to local disease settings for maximum impact.

Prospects for new interventions

Continued investment in the development and deployment of new malaria vaccines and next-generation tools will be key to achieving the 2030 global malaria targets.

A second malaria vaccine, the R21/Matrix-M (R21) vaccine, if approved, could help close the sizable gap between supply and demand and further reduce child illness and death from malaria. It is a priority for WHO to continue the thorough and efficient expert review of the R21 malaria vaccine once additional key safety and efficacy data from the ongoing R21 phase 3 trial are available and provided to WHO.

Phased introductions of the RTS,S malaria vaccine in additional countries in Africa are expected to begin in early 2024.

In the vector control space, there are 28 new products in the R&D pipeline. Tools under evaluation include, for example, new types of insecticide-treated nets, targeted baits that attract mosquitoes, spatial repellents, lethal house lures (eaves tubes) and genetic engineering of mosquitoes.

Researchers are prioritizing the development of non-ACT treatments in the field of antimalarial medicines due to the emergence and spread of partial artemisinin resistance. The development of next-generation medicines, such as "triple ACTs," which use a combination of artemisinin and two partner drugs, is underway to reduce the risk of drug resistance.
