I'm pretty sure that's a Sambar Rusa Unicolor.

Threatened but not endangered just yet.
Silence, exile, and cunning.

Are they protected ? I was told that some species of deer are legal to hunt and eat.

But how to know which is which, once it's on the plate ? :?

Pretty sure they're endangered in Cambodia. What are their numbers here, must be pretty damn low. These sort of incidents happen on a weekly basis where I'm from, so it's kind of funny to hear it making the news here given that it's such a rare occurrence.

It probably is rare for a tourist to run one over. To the locals its just food.

I think they are rare. I have done plenty of birding an seeing any animal is always exceptional. Come to think of I do not think I have seen Sambar in Cambodia do I see Eld's Deer every year at their wintering grounds (and I have seen them being hunted there).
