Cambodia Daily Closes

Cambodia news in English! Here you'll find all the breaking news from Cambodia translated into English for our international readership and expat community to read and comment on. The majority of our news stories are gathered from the local Khmer newspapers, but we also bring you newsworthy media from Cambodia before you read them anywhere else. Because of the huge population of the capital city, most articles are from Phnom Penh, but Siem Reap, Sihanoukville, and Kampot often make the headlines as well. We report on all arrests and deaths of foreigners in Cambodia, and the details often come from the Cambodian police or local Khmer journalists. As an ASEAN news outlet, we also publish regional news and events from our neighboring countries. We also share local Khmer news stories that you won't find in English anywhere else. If you're looking for a certain article, you may use our site's search feature to find it quickly.

The second worst thing about the debacle is the begging leter Bernie sent to the HE. He should have known better.
If I were him, I'd keep the paper running online by copying and pasting from the KT. :hattip:
Also, the HE already tried silencing critics with Alex Gonzalez. Seems like you don't need to necessarily be in country to find out what's happening and have an effect.

Steady on now, I was only meaning the neutral articles. At least the KT has some, although, that may change in the coming weeks. I don't think Fresh News has ever released a nuetral or non pro- government article since it's inception. That's not what it's about.

Cambodia Daily shuts with 'dictatorship' parting shot at prime minister HE
English-language newspaper had a reputation for breaking news about sensitive topics such as corruption and environmental issues

4 September 2017
One of Cambodia’s most stridently independent newspapers, the Cambodia Daily, published its last edition on Monday with the headline “Descent Into Outright Dictatorship” as it closed amid a crackdown on critics of prime minister HE.

The English-language paper had been given a deadline of one month to pay $6.3m in years of back taxes, which the publication disputed and described as “astronomical”.

Its final front page led with the arrest on Sunday of Cambodia’s main opposition leader, Kem Sokha, who was accused of treason in a significant escalation of the campaign against HE’s opponents. The paper also reported on its own closure.

“We have been a burr in HE’s side for the entire time that we have been operating,” said the newspaper’s American editor-in-chief, Jodie DeJonge...

Farewell Cambodia Daily.

The Cambodia Daily confirms it will close on Monday
Sun, 3 September 2017
The Cambodia Daily today officially announced it will cease publication on Monday, following what it described in a press release as “extra-legal threats by the government”.

In the release, the Daily confirmed the newspaper would shut down over a $6.3 million tax dispute with the Cambodian government, a dispute that representatives and observers have condemned as being political in nature.

“The power to tax is the power to destroy. And after 24 years and 15 days, the Cambodian government has destroyed The Cambodia Daily, a special and singular part of Cambodia’s free press,” the statement reads.

The press release acknowledged the possibility of a “legitimate” dispute, but accused the Cambodian government of making “unfounded and defamatory” statements and handling the situation illegally and unprofessionally.

“The Daily has been targeted with an astronomical tax assessment, leaks and false statements by the tax department and public vilification by the head of government before an audit, much less a legal proceeding,” the release continues.

“On Monday, the Daily’s service to the Cambodian people will end. We want to thank … our staff, who have fought fiercely and courageously to report All the News Without Fear or Favor,” the statement concludes.
