Two gem-miners killed when their homemade mine collapsed

LUMPHAT, Rattanak Kiri Province:
At 2:25 on 25 August 2017, two men were trapped in the gems mine after digging too deep underground approximately 20 metres causing the soft surface of the mine to collapse on itself.
The tragic incident, which occurred in Chong Ra Village, Ba Tang Cummune, Lum Phat District, Rattanakiri, has killed Mr. Theung Rith,a 15 year old indigenous Tumpoun man,and Mr. Nhem Theung aged 25 also indigenous.

After investigation, police concluded that the victims died from the accidental collapse of the mine and they ruled out any suspicions of foul play.

Another collapsing mine has claimed a victim, this time in Kratie province.

27 August 2017, Kratie Province:
200 metres unauthorized gold mine was dug by seven men causing it to collapse on them and one person was killed instantly after being transferred to the hospital and the other one has his right arm broken in Oh Po Village, Kbal Domrei Commune, Sambo District on 27 August, 2017.
The victim who died was Mr. Houn Veasna--killed at the age of 33, lived in Kompong Thom Province and the survivor who got injured was Mr. Nhaet Phat, 23 years of age.

Three more people are now reported to have died in the Kratie mine accident.

Kratie (FN), September 1 - Three gold mine workers were fatally injured in a landslide accident on Thursday in a gold mine located in Kbal Damrey commune, Sambor district, Kratie province.

According to the report, the three victims went into the mine pit with a depth of 25 meters, and the three bodies were lost in the pit. On Tuesday, two people also died in the same accident.

Minister of Mine and Enegry, Suy Sem, considered the place as "anarchic without proper regulations”, and asked the provincial authorities to work together to prevent further incidents.

yes, even shallow ground can be dangerous from carbon dioxide.
you have to ventilate by connecting 2 shafts or use a blower and a tube

Being an ex miner, for ventilation you need a surface fan and tube/ airbags going down then the toxic air will be pushed to the surface.

when we used to mine south of Pailin in the late 80's, we dug holes like these but most were never deeper than 5 meters>
same goes for many small miners in Mogok in Myanmar nowadays.

Kratie mine collapses
6 September 2017
Three miners are still missing following the collapse of a gold mine shaft in Kratie province last Thursday, the latest in a recent spate of mine collapses in Cambodia.

The collapse was the third such incident in the country in the past two weeks and the second in Kratie.

Bun Chheum, Sambor district police chief, said the men were prospectors inspecting the mine. They had a tentative deal to mine the site in exchange for paying the owner, Da Lin, a 50 percent fee of their findings.

The three missing are Chin Theara, 25; Noun Chanra, 50; and Reach Sakea, 21.

Chheum said the 30-metre shaft likely collapsed into another nearby mine.

“The three asked to go down to check if there was gold . . . we don’t know whether they died or not because we could not find them,” Chheum said, adding that the families are assuming the worst and preparing funeral ceremonies...
