Govt. threatens to shut down Cambodia Daily

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! We also have some Khmer members here as well, but English is the main language used on CEO. You're welcome to have a look around, and if you decide you want to participate, you can become a part our international expat community by signing up for a free account.

Question: do they, or do they not, owe taxes?

Question: if they do, which country in the world does not penalise tax fraud/non-payment?

I wonder what the penalty would be for avoiding taxes in the US, AUS or the UK?

Cambodia is the next Thailand.

Oh wait, it's the other way around!

Or, maybe Cambodia is the next Cambodia...

Anyway, these two kingdoms should get together and have a war so everyone will forget about all the problems.

My how things have changed.
From wiki leaks US embassy
Public Library of US Diplomacy .
https://wikileaks.org/plusd/cables/07PH ... 682_a.html
2006
. (SBU) Summary. According to a 2006 study by Freedom
House, Cambodia stands alone among mainland Southeast Asian
countries as having improved its commitment to freedom of the
press. At Embassy urging, Cambodia removed all prison terms
for criminal defamation -- a weapon of choice in this part of
the world to quash dissent. The print media has become more
open over the last year, and the government has also begun to
relax its stranglehold on electronic media, allowing
unprecendented criticism of its policies. One of the
government's primary motivations for relaxing its grip on the
media is a desire to markedly improve its relationship with
the United States. We are using our assistance programs to
better train journalists, fund a cutting edge TV show that
discusses real and often sensitive political issues, and
improve the coverage area of independent radio stations.
These positive trends, however, are tenuous and much more
needs to be done to ensure true press freedom. The
Ambassador recommends Cambodia as a possible stop for
high-level visits to preserve these successes and underscore
USG commitment for promoting further liberalization of the
media. End Summary

2007
On May 3, Cambodia observed UN World Press Freedom
Day by noting a recent victory -- Freedom House, an
international NGO supporting the expansion of freedom in the
world -- moved Cambodia from the "Not Free" category to
"Partly Free" in its annual survey "Freedom of the Press
2007" and hailed Cambodia as one of the only countries in
Southeast Asia to make significant inroads in media
liberalization. According to Freedom House, the region as a
whole experienced a decline of press freedom due to coups and
military intervention in Thailand and Fiji; political and
civil conflicts in the Philippines, Sri Lanka, and East
Timor; and continued suppression of media in Malaysia. Laos,
Vietnam, and, in particular, Burma, continue to be known for
their restrictive media environments. Worldwide, Freedom
House viewed 2006 as a bad year for media independence.
Cambodia, the youngest member of ASEAN and one of the poorest
countries in Asia, shows some of the few, positive
developments in press freedom.

The only people crying foul and preaching "save the daily" are the CD. Nobody else gives a hoot, someone should tell them to stop being so self indulgent. I'd be surprised if anyone ever read more than your headlines, which we will now get from other sources. Honestly most of us won't even know they are gone.

The fact you thought you were relevant was your undoing.

Cut, Rinse, Repeat Burma.

I liken the CD to Adam Sandler's many uses in "Big Daddy".

The thread about this on tof is funny as fck. Everyone suddenly hates the Daily. Don't a percentage of charitable donations get taken off tax? I can't see many businesses giving to charity otherwise. Lol

How much is the Daily? A dollar? They must have sold around 2.5 million copies in the last 10 or so years. That's around 749 copies sold per day for the last 12 years. Obviously a much bigger readership than any of us ever imagined.

I would say they should really go after Beltei, PUC, Western, Westline etc etc etc. As they have been taking tax off foreign teachers for years, and I very much expect, pocketing it. PUC for a long time, thd others more recently I beleve. I'd hate to see their tax bills. Damn shame they are all so well connected.
What ever happened to those tax guys that would go round bar owners and say you should pay this much, but I can sort you out for this much?
