Former Deputy Prime Minister & KNUP President NHEK BUN CHHAY Arrested For Illicit Drug Production Back in 2012
CAMBODIA NEWS: Nhek Bun Chhay, the president of Khmer National United Party and former Deputy Prime Minister, has been arrested at 12 noon today for his alleged involvement in the illegal production of illicit drugs in Kampong Speu back in 2012.
General Neth Savoeun told local media that they had arrested him due to a court order to bring him in for questioning.
This comes less than 2 months after ex-RCAF commander Nhek Bun Chhay was stripped of his role as an adviser to the Cambodian government and forced to surrender his firearms because he was “no longer loyal.”

Plenty of pants that could be pulled down in the CPP cabinet. Drugs, prostitution- including underage ( who do you think was running Svay Pak?), land grabs, the tree trade, with a fair few murders thrown in .
I think that's the point. Another threat, but this time to the PiyuM's own party. Democracy at work.

Nhek Bun Chhay has consistently been a turncoat over the years. He tried to get the remaining Anlong Veng Khmer Rouge to join the FUNCINPEC military in 1997, even though an 11 member FUNCINPEC delegation that had gone up there earlier that year had been murdered. He again joined up with Khmer Rouge after the failed FUNCINPEC coup. I'm not sure why he was ever trusted after or given a government role after that. His latest stunts, forming a minor party which won the Thma Puok Commune election then offering to go into an alliance with the CNRP has sealed his fate finally.
Silence, exile, and cunning.

So they accuse him of being involved in the drug business in 2012.
According to Wikileaks
(https://wikileaks.org/plusd/cables/07PH ... 515_a.html) the CIA had already helped in a very successful raid on his premises in Kampong Speu in 2007!
Which leads to the question who let him get back into business afterwards.

Re: Former Deputy Prime Minister & KNUP President NHEK BUN CHHAY Arrested For Illicit Drug Production Back in 2012
Several political analysts yesterday claimed the recent drug production charges levelled against former deputy prime minister Nhek Bunchhay are politically motivated and may not even have legal standing.
Mr Bunchhay, formerly the co-defence minister in the Funcinpec-CPP coalition government and most recently an adviser to Prime Minister HE, had his home raided and was formally charged this week with conspiring to produce drugs in a case dating back to 2007.
Mr Bunchhay’s fortunes began to change in June, when Mr HE learned of a phone call he made to the opposition CNRP prior to the commune elections, in which he allegedly promised supporters of his fledgling Khmer National United Party would casts votes for the CNRP.
This led to the Prime Minister stripping Mr Bunchhay of his advisor role, and then a purging of nearly 20 KNUP officials from government posts.
Sourn Serey Ratha, president of the nascent Khmer Power Party, said Mr Bunchhay was initially cleared in the 2007 case due to his friendly relations with the ruling CPP, but now that he is out of favour, the charges have sprung up again...

This is referring to the raid that took place in April 2007. From the wikileaks report:bong.kuit wrote: ↑Thu Aug 03, 2017 8:38 pm So they accuse him of being involved in the drug business in 2012.

Drug Lab Connected to Senior Government Official? --------------------------------------------- ---- 4. (SBU) According to CADP Chief Moek Dara, both the Kampong Speu and Phnom Penh properties are registered to Chea Chung. Chea Chung, reportedly a military colonel, served as advisor to Nhek Bun Chhay, the Secretary-General of the royalist party (FUNCINPEC) and coalition partner with the ruling CPP in Cambodia's government, when Nhek Bun Chhay was co-Minister of Defense. Some sources say that the two had a close relationship, with Chea Chung making large donations to FUNCINPEC and Chea Chung and Nhek Bun Chhay sometimes sharing a house or apartment. According to FUNCINPEC, however, Chea Chung ceased advising Nhek Bun Chhay one year ago and they have no relationship today. There are persistent rumors from Nhek Bun Chhay's political rivals as well as local villagers that the Kampong Speu land was in fact bought by Chea Chung and given to Nhek Bun Chhay, with the implication that Nhek Bun Chhay must have at least been aware of the drug production. One political rival stated that a car belonging to Nhek Bun Chhay was found at the property. Moek Dara said that he had also heard the rumors of Nhek Bun Chhay's involvement but could not comment on them.
