False kidnapping report on Facebook - man beaten by crowd, arrested.

Post by CEOCambodiaNews »

31 July 2017 - Kampong Thom provincial police yesterday arrested a man who posted a false story of child kidnapping on Facebook, just days after the Interior Ministry attempted to quell fears spreading among parents over the dozens of posts appearing online.

In response to the spike in Facebook posts, the Interior Ministry two weeks ago created two hotlines for tips to police to quicken response times to kidnappings.

National deputy police chief Kirth Chantharith on Thursday said that not all of the Facebook posts were accurate, but insisted police would investigate them all to bring real kidnappers to justice as well as fear-mongers.

Yesterday, Kampong Thom provincial police arrested Nay Sineng, who posted on Facebook a day earlier that a child had been abducted for organ harvesting.

“We have already sent him to the court because the information he posted was fake,” said deputy police chief Ke Khanara.
“He posted the fake information which also stated that the perpetrator was Vietnamese. There is no such case.”

Kompong Thom police chief Ouk Kosal said locals got their hands on the accused man and beat him before police could escort him away.
“They beat the suspect causing serious injuries especially because they believed that he was involved in the case of kidnapping, which was false to begin with,” he said...

Seems to have started a mass panic. My ex rang me from Stung Treng last week, telling me to keep the kids in the house or they'd be snatched for body parts when they stepped outside. Those wicked yuon again! Weren't they satisfied with all the people they killed in the Koh Pich bridge stampede, as Kem Sokha once said ?

I also think someone was arrested earlier this month for posting a VERY fake looking pic of a plane crash in Cambodia on Facebook.

Welcome to CEO, Gilmore.
An airline employee, who was arrested and "re-educated" on proper use of social media then released later that day.

The same panic in Koh Kong too. People rely on facebook too often.

It wasn't just Kampong Thom & Koh Kong. Their were incidents in Phnom Penh, Preah Sihanouk, & Palin and the day before in Kandal and Prey Veng.
The headline on Rasmei yesterday read "Panic in Nearly All Provinces as Rumours of Child Abduction & Dissections Spread" https://goo.gl/uyzWCA

It's worrying how fast mob mentality can take hold right across the country.

The authorities have been quick to pin the blame on a group of instigators on FB who are alleged to be CNRP linked; the intention of the rumour spreaders being to paint the authorities as inept and unable to deal with a network of Vietnamese kidnappers/organ harvesters. http://www.rfa.org/khmer/news/social-ec ... 52508.html
There was a case of an attempted kidnapping in Prey Veng about 4 days ago, where a girl (according to her) was caught, tied up, put in a Camry and then inexplicably released. Rumours seem to have started there, leading to a Vietnamese woman being accused in Phnom Penh of trying to lure a teenager into a car, and then the police station being surrounded by an angry mob all night 2/4 nights ago.
Although I do remember a similar failed kidnapping in Sihanoukville not too long (a year) ago.

False kidnapping hysteria ‘not helping anything’, police say
Mon, 31 July 2017
Police officials have warned parents and villagers not to contribute to social media hysteria over false accounts of kidnappings of children for organ harvesting in the wake of two vicious mob beatings over the weekend.

The police directive comes after two separate assaults, in Preah Sihanouk and Kampong Thom provinces, where the victims were falsely accused of kidnapping children and removing their kidneys.

Preah Sihanouk Provincial Police Chief Chuon Narin yesterday debunked rumours – circulated on the Facebook page of “Pov Virakbot” – that the victim in the beating there had kidnapped any children or extracted their internal organs.

“I reject this completely and confirm the truth for the public in order to stop the confusion,” he said. “I ordered the experts and local authorities to investigate and discovered that the man who was tied up and abused . . . he is a rubbish sweeper at Veal Rinh Market and he is a drunkard, not a child kidnapper.”
Also on Saturday, in Kampong Thom, two men from Prey Veng province were severely beaten and dragged into a pond on similar accusations, according to Provincial Police Chief Ouk Kosal. Kosal said the pair were not kidnappers but were being questioned by police.

He added a man, identified as “Nay Sineng” on Facebook, had broadcast false information that the two men were Vietnamese child kidnappers and organ traffickers...
