Authoritarian leaders have become a central feature of global politics. Since 2000, self-styled strongmen have risen to power in capitals as diverse as Moscow, Beijing, Delhi, Brasilia, Budapest, Ankara, Riyadh and Washington.
These leaders are nationalists and social conservatives, with little tolerance for minorities, dissent or the interests of foreigners. At home, they claim to stand up for ordinary people against globalist elites; abroad, they posture as the embodiments of their nations. And everywhere they go, they encourage a cult of personality. These leaders are not just operating in authoritarian political systems but have begun to emerge in the heartlands of liberal democracy.

Been a while since I read this series but I have read them so many times since the mid 80's I could almost write them out verbatim
I replaced the worn out copies with a complete set sometime around 2007/8. I recall buying Shelter of Stone in hardback as I couldn't wait for the paperback to come out!

The above photo was taken before the final book "The Land of Painted Caves" came out... which I read but it wasn't my favorite. She spent pages describing in an almost Tolkienesque way every minute detail but the main plot did move on nicely, just too much about the caves they visited when the main character and her tribe went to a yearly meeting. Still a great series though.IraHayes wrote: ↑Sun May 08, 2022 7:53 pm

Second time reading it. It's fictional, as it was written before any of the MACV SOG guys were allowed to speak about operating across the fence during the Vietnam war but, it's based on the authors experiences. Recommended if you find that kind of thing interesting.
Edit: it would make an amazing film. If anyone has a spare $100m...

Douglass Murray goes around the world saying; 'Europe is dying and there's nothing we can do about it'. Everyone knows Europe will be majority Muslim in a few generations... May as well read something else.tightenupvolume1 wrote: ↑Mon May 09, 2022 1:26 pm I am about to start on "The war on the west" by Douglas Murray

Re: What books are you reading?
A couple of 70's British rock and roll memoirs...
Actually, I purchased the Woody Woodmansey book awhile back and have been saving it for a time when I'm traveling somewhere.
Just picked up the Ian Hunter book, which is kind of hard to find, from the website PhuketRichard posted on page 5.
So, not reading either one just yet.
