Cambodian philanthropist Geraldine Cox (Sunrise Cambodia) sues for defamation after Facebook comment
A flamboyant philanthropist claims a Canberra Facebook comment critical of her work defamed her and harmed the operation of her Cambodian charity.
The message was only 27 words long and visible online to a small audience for 38 minutes, but orphanage patron Geraldine Cox is suing Canberra law student Juanita Zankin for the harm she alleges the post caused to her reputation in Australia and abroad.

I think her former PR person did far more damage! Some of the things she came out with were outrageous.

From the OP link
Ms Cox had "disclosed masturbating a disabled child to 'get her to sleep'"

There's a documentary about Cox from the 1990s and she herself describes doing this:Username Taken wrote: ↑Sun Jul 16, 2017 5:47 pm From the OP link

.The case appeared before the registrar last month to hear a number of pre-trial matters, including an attempt to strike out the defence, a bid to have the lawsuit dismissed as vexatious, and an application for security for costs
I may be wrong, but It would appear that it is not the first time Ms Cox has tried to silence criticism. Does anybody have a history of Sunrise's/ Cox's litegation cases against it's critics' in Australia?
Meet the vexatious litigants
http://www.smh.com.au/national/meet-the ... -4pdy.html
It seems to be a bit of a dodgey law at best, and can only be used when the litigants have a history of harrasing people through the courts.
But it's interesting that the defendant, Ms Zankin, has already used it to try and throw Cox's case out. I'm guessing Cox must have tried to silence a few people already for the lawyers to try to use it against her?
The poverty porn stuff was very un PC of her organisation, but maybe there are worse things that Sunrise get up to?
Ms Zankin, the student lawyer who studied here, seems to think so.
.Ms Zankin said other concerns raised on her visit included, that Ms Cox had "disclosed masturbating a disabled child to 'get her to sleep'", that 75 per cent of children in care in Cambodia had parents, that tourists are encouraged to visit orphanages which put children at risk of physical and psychological harm, and that Sunrise Cambodia had "advertised in such a way that degraded children" in contravention of codes issues by the Australia regulator
The child abuse claim is an odd one.
Cox has supposedly readjusted her charity to take on the new UNICEF rules to increase funding into more outreach programs to reintigrate the children back into their homes, and to stop orphanage tourism. At least, that what Sunrise have said. It will be interesting to hear what evidence Ms Zankin puts forward.
At the moment it looks like the lawyers are crowding together to protect one of their own.
I wonder if Sunrise run an MFI program? EDIT: A quick search shows that maybe they don't. Perhaps Ms Zankin would be better critizing different NGOs?
See crook!!!

If you mean the thing about masturbating the mentally handicapped kid to get the kid to sleep, the claim comes from her own mouth on the documentary "My Khmer Heart". I should have checked that link, I see now that it doesn't work, apologies, the film is widely available though and they sell it in the DVD shops on riverside etc. She's talking about a kid she informally adopted in 1975 when she was first here. Whether that constitutes abuse I'm not sure, but there was certainly no indication that it was done for her own pleasure. It seems a fairly unorthodox approach.

At the very least it's hugely inappropriate and creepy.John Bingham wrote:If you mean the thing about masturbating the mentally handicapped kid to get the kid to sleep, the claim comes from her own mouth on the documentary "My Khmer Heart". Is that a man bun she has on her head? If anyone should be suing, it should be Ronald McDonald for ripping his style.
I will never get the image of her jacking off a disabled Cambodian kid out of my head.
