What is the most Ex-pat friendly device?
Re: What is the most Ex-pat friendly device?
For general browsing and an entertainment center, I have a Dell pc running Ubuntu connected to the flat screen tv in the living room. I had to add an HDMI card so I could connect the two. I recommend Ubuntu if you want to get away from Windows, but you need something your family can use easily. BTW I also run it all day downloading torrents while I am at work.
For work purposes I use a lenovo s series laptop running Crunch Bang aka #!.
As mention in another post I am looking for a cheap Huawei tablet to serve as my e-book platform. I hate reading e-books on my tv and laptop.
The question is, why commit to one device?

I use a roku 3 as a media streamer and as a Plex and Playon client. In the back room I have a NAS that also runs the plex and Playon server as well as a bit torrent client that works seamlessly with plex.
The whole servers headless and very much automated. It gives all the media viewing I need at home and away. There is a little setup involved though.

Did you build or buy your NAS box?Digg3r wrote: In the back room I have a NAS that also runs the plex and Playon server as well as a bit torrent client that works seamlessly with plex.
A while back I was interested in this. But, it seemed it was beyond my tech skills/knowledge to set up and I didn't want to buy one online and risk "losing" it in the mail.

Built it. Was just a legacy pc destined for the scrapheap. Powerful enough to trans code 1080p on the fly but also uses minimal electricity.

Running a Netgear ReadyNAS V2+ (or somesuch) with 6TB in RAID (4 x 2 TB) - recommend it for anyone who's in the market. Fairly idiot proof as long as you don't try and modify it.
