Cambodia news in English! Here you'll find all the breaking news from Cambodia translated into English for our international readership and expat community to read and comment on. The majority of our news stories are gathered from the local Khmer newspapers, but we also bring you newsworthy media from Cambodia before you read them anywhere else. We report on all arrests and deaths of foreigners in Cambodia, and the details often come from the Cambodian police or local Khmer journalists. As an ASEAN news outlet, we also publish regional news and events from our neighboring countries. We also share local Khmer news stories that you won't find in English anywhere else. STEVEN GRIFFITHS (British Backpacker) Drowns in Kampot River in Cambodia; Family Says He Can't Swim

Post by CEOCambodiaNews »

CAMBODIA NEWS: Steve Griffiths, a 21 year old man from Weston-Super-Mare, UK drowned in an accident on Kampot river outside the High Tide Guesthouse, Restaurant and Bar.

While swimming in the river that morning, he suddenly went underwater while waving for help. His friends and the owners of the guesthouse tried to rescue him, but to no avail. His body was found the next day around 2:45pm. The victim had been working at Coco Boutique Resort on Koh Rong Island as a barman, but for the past two weeks he had been staying with friends at the High Tide guesthouse in Kampot, Cambodia.

Eyewitnesses say he was on an inner tube, when he fell through the hole and started screaming for help, waving his hands in the air. Steve Griffiths' father says he couldn't even swim and wants to know who let his 21 year old son in the river.

CEO Cambodia News reported on another death of a backpacker in Kampot 11 months ago, Australian Female Kristy Anne Blackney Found Dead in Kampot River By Owner of Arcadia Backpackers, whose cause of death was also drowning.

RIP Steve Griffiths. Condolences to family and friends.

RIP. Tragic at 21y but do these guest houses promote swimming in that river? I guess obviously from the platforms out in the water they must but human feces and all other related items are piped directly (untreated) into the river both upstream and downstream from that guest house.

Steve Griffiths, 21 yo British man drowns at Kampot Guesthouse

Why doesn't someone start an uncensored Kampot Facebook page to warn people about this stuff.

What would cause a man to drown like this?

According to his father, Steven can't swim.

His father also wants to know who "allowed" his 21 year old son in the water.

I personally don't blame anyone else for his death. I can't imagine guesthouses or anyone else being responsible for barring people from entering the river if they're adults. If you can't swim, stay the fuck out of water, especially rivers.

This news has made it to the Daily Mail:

British backpacker, 21, who could not swim drowns in Cambodia after being dragged underwater while using an inflatable rubber ring

Tragic for sure, but damn, if you can't swim, stay on dry land.

RIP

I want to know who let him get on a plane and travel abroad?
Silence, exile, and cunning.

The same people who allowed him to travel abroad.?... himself!
He was 21 years not 21 months. Now his death at this age is tragic but a better question to tear yourself up with would be "why did my son go in the river" not "who allowed" it.

If true, the father's question is one of the most moronic ever asked.

I suppose, in grief, it is natural to seek to blame (without thought).

Condolences.
