10 things banned in Cambodia

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! We also have some Khmer members here as well, but English is the main language used on CEO. 10 things banned in Cambodia

Post by phuketrichard »

some might surprise even long term residents;
4. Taiwanese and Tibetan flags

Even flags are subject to the Cambodian government’s scrutiny, as Prime Minister HE announced the banning of the Taiwanese and Tibetan flags this year. This is in line with Cambodia’s support of the “One China” principle, which asserts China’s sovereignty over Taiwan and mainland China, including states with separatist movements. Speaking on the policy, HE said, “In the case of Taiwan, I request that Khmer-Chinese refrain from celebrating Taiwanese holidays and brandishing the Taiwanese flag, as it is prohibited.”

Funny article, but there are a lot more things not banned here than banned.
Silence, exile, and cunning.

It depends on who you are and what you have done as to whether you get arrested here. Apparently it's illegal to smoke in bars and restaurants, and apparently it's illegal for Cambodians to gamble. Where is bong Eliot Ness when you need him?

'The so-called “samurai” swords used to be widely available in Phnom Penh, with local craftsmen skilled enough to take on the world’s finest...'

Yeah, right, in their dreams.

Where would they source the hq steel?

And how would they layer it?

Journo should know better.

To be fair, that's pretty much the story in every country in the world, bar a very few.

10. Marriage to Koreans

With the discovery of human trafficking rings intended to send brides to Korea, officials banned marriage between Cambodian women and South Korean men in 2010 for about a month. This is the second time the Cambodian government has banned marriage between Cambodian women and foreign nationals; in 2008, there was an eight-month ban of marriages to all foreigners.

They missed out no.11: Marriage to any foreigner 50 years of age or older. Or if younger, needing to hsve $2500 per month income in a country with an official GDP-PP of around $1000 per year: otherwise, BANNED
That's your racism, right there.

Haha, I just read this. Good list.

A few more for the list:
Sex toys. :cavity search smiley: They are banned from the KOW. :nono:

Electronic cigarettes :bong: are illegal in Cambodia.

Adultery :sex: is also illegal (under certain conditions like if you are an annoying member of the opposition.) :whip2:
Actually, many things are illegal for members of the opposition. Too many to name, and the gate-posts keep moving, so you never know.

Things like having meetings or gatherings without permission may also be illegal. Even weddings and engagement parties can be illegal :rave:
Making too much noise can be illegal too.

Sling-shots are illegal in Phnom Penh if I remember rightly from an old thread here. Guns also for most people. :rambo:

And apparently, it's also illegal to chop down Cambodia's native forests and sell the wood to Vietnam. :licker:
