According to court documents, Mr Nhork was upset that his girlfriend, Khan Rachna, a 21-year-old garment worker, had ended their relationship in December 2016. Mr Nhork visited her rental room on December 27 in Chaktomuk commune, pleading for her to take him back. When she refused, he took a knife and cut her throat.
When neighbours responded to the commotion, he turned the knife on himself, slitting his own throat in an attempted suicide. Both suffered serious injuries, but survived.
During his trial on June 9, Mr Nhork claimed he did not attempt to kill Ms Rachna, but was attempting suicide in front of her when she intervened.
“I did not cut her,” he claimed. “She intervened to take the knife from me while I was cutting my own throat and it caused her injuries.”
Ms Rachna countered his claims in her own testimony, telling the court that he grabbed her, slit her throat and then cut his own throat when he realised people had heard her yelling for help.
