Cambodia news in English! Here you'll find all the breaking news from Cambodia translated into English for our international readership and expat community to read and comment on. The majority of our news stories are gathered from the local Khmer newspapers, but we also bring you newsworthy media from Cambodia before you read them anywhere else. We report on all arrests and deaths of foreigners in Cambodia, and the details often come from the Cambodian police or local Khmer journalists. As an ASEAN news outlet, we also publish regional news and events from our neighboring countries. We also share local Khmer news stories that you won't find in English anywhere else. Since when is that any reason to have 40 or more Chinese workers/visitors rioting in the streets with iron bars, etc.
its in their nature, since there is 1.6billion chinks in the world, their arrogance could be summed up in one statement in the early 90s when they were a rising economic power and trying to recover taiwan back into motherland,

they said: if each and every one of chinese mainlander would to spit on taiwan, we could drown taiwan.

Well, I'm not one to defend the Chinese continuing, and still taught in school, idea that they are a different, Superior, species. And I'm pretty sure their arogance knows no bounds in this area, especially since becoming the world's first economy.
But the Khmer can be equally stuck up, in case you hadn't noticed.

But leaving all that aside, it does seem they were construction workers, and therefore highly likely to be Chinese criminals on government deals.

See if you can make head or tail of this report because I'm buggered if i can.
For a start the report says the police fired four times, but in the video, since deleted from Facebook, you can hear many more shots than that.

Thirty-Six Chinese Men Arrested for Violence

"Police in Preah Sihanouk province on Sunday gave contrasting accounts about the arrests of 36 Chinese construction workers—and the later release of 33 of them—early on Saturday morning for alleged violence near Sihanoukville’s O’Chheuteal Beach.

According to Sam Prak, Buon commune’s police chief, the Chinese men constituted a mob that indiscriminately attacked passersby with iron bars, sticks and rocks near the “two lions” roundabout at about 2 a.m. Up to 60 police officers needed to be called to the scene, and the mob was controlled only after police fired four times into the air, Mr. Prak said.

“They were drunk,” he said.

Mr. Prak added that the mob had formed after an unspecified dispute over a cigarette purchase, and that six or seven people had been beaten.

However, Kol Phally, deputy provincial police chief, said that after questioning 33 of the 36 arrested were found to not have been involved in violence and were released.

The remaining three were being questioned at the provincial court, he said.

Authorities had responded to three complaints and had intervened before anyone was beaten, Mr. Phally added.

According to Mr. Phally, the dispute started when revelers at a nightclub bumped into each other while dancing
.

Which is it?
A dispute over ciggerette purchase - what does that even mean.
A bump in a nightclub - well people out here have died for that before.
Or some iced- up prozzy round the back of the bogs giving it the large.
See crook!!!

The debate reminds of my childhood at a time when a large number of new immigrants moved into my hometown. Very bad language was used and we kids copied it of course/unfortunately. I was a bit in the middle as I had immigrant neighbors which made a half-immigrant in the eyes of my sub-urban schoolmates. That was not too bad as they had the money but not the brains which was what matters in the classroom. Decades later I am ashamed about these people. My neighbors were the nicest people on earth and Muslim. They showed me how to repair my car as they did that with their own. This was a huge help for a poor student. As a kid the wives invited that sneaky small boy into their kitchen from that strange but good scent of food came. Until know I remember my first Middle Eastern food as if it was yesterday. Their kids are now physicians, businessmen etc. and they saved whole areas in the city from falling into decay or lifted some out of that.

The difference was these were families and not a bunch of young males with dry throats and pressure on their testicles. Yet, I have seen them on the beach at night and they were generally very polite. As loud in a group as some of those sheep molesters are. They drink liberally and smoke like a steam engine. Some bring their Cambodian good girl co-workers who like the free beer after work but not more. Last week a good looking guy had made some impression on a beautiful Khmer lady from the company (she had her uniform on) but then started talking to ladyboys and the lady and her friend abruptly left. I take it that they still have to learn one or two things. I did not encounter any floor spitting. All in all these guys seem to work in hotels, casinos etc. not on construction sides.

As for me, the guys are always nice. Often want me to join their table or at least share a beer. Problem is the lack of a common language. I never saw Khmers and Chinese fighting there and it was and still is all good humor. The ladyboys certainly hope for a large new clientele and the guys are perhaps not to adjusted to local workings here. That will come.

Certainly, the wave of Chinese arrivals in SHV is a fundamental change and many are unhappy but once we look beyond the category 'Chinese' and all that is associated with it and start accepting the individual things look differently. If you think that Chinese are just 'chinks' what about others with darker skin? A certain religion? Where this kind of thinking leads to is just too obvious.

In sum, I will continue to smile to people who invite me although they dont know me and cant communicate with a common language. Beating up women is a global phenomenon and just shows that gutter rats are the same everywhere.

I should add that I passed the Golden Lion and the crowd gathered there on early Saturday morning on my way to the beach. All was peaceful at the beach bar though numbers were low.

in chinese school curriculum they were taught that they were oppressed by the westerners and japs, now they must rise up and be strong, thats why the whole nationalisitic pride and what not, the only point that seems to point them out as being an arrogance , superior species that they call themsleves sons of the dragons, so if to compare them to nazis propoganda, they started out as painting themselves as the oppressed weakling underdog, and all these actions now are their well deserved "revenge"

Thats my take on this

and thats my point again, 90% of these guys will not adjust, they expect others to adjust to them, thats where the arrogance comes in,
1 - they expect all khmers to start learning chinese (sadly which is happening now),
2 - they expect khmer to start using RMB (in which some cases are starting to),
3 - they expect khmer to start cooking food according to their taste (in some restaurants it is started)
and many more...

for example 2 and 3, the khmer cant change that fast, thats why all chinese shops will accept RMB and cater to chinese taste

they came in, Too many, Too quickly, when where have you seen any invasion by a foreign culture that rivals their speed? dont compare military invasion
Money is not the problem, the problem is no money

A image of the Khmer girl who allegedly started this whole thing, looking a bloody mess is in the Darknet News forum:

Well many have been doing that for some time, but it's probably a different Chinese.

Last night I walked to the beach. Passing a guesthouse that caters to Chinese two young guys (guests) were standing outside. They mustered their English and told me 'be careful.' This was well-meant friendly advice. I just replied 'no fighting today.' At the beach no Chinese to be seen, just some stupid backpackers who had brought their own ugly women all the way to SHV plus a large and merry Khmer crowd. Apparently, the young Chinese who had been happily mingling the week before are now too scared to show up. Let's hope this changes as otherwise mob rule might turn to the next target and the bars do need to the extra USD during the low season.
I also did not notice any Chinese walking around along the back streets.

Luckily, and also most rewarding, I almost bumped into 3 (!!) Chinese ladies walking along the place at 2 AM. One even gave me a look. Anyone here who could post some basic but helpful expressions for auspicious occasions like this? I would have loved to be locked up with any of the three (for a week at last).

The friendly Chinese at the guesthouse show to me that at least some make an effort to communicate, are well-meaning, and obviously do not see them as a species apart. This kind of stigmatizing we know from the past and it is sad that some members here are not beyond racism while trying to appear as something different.

Trying to pay in Chinese currency. My Lord, many barang prefer paying in USD in Cambodia and not only here. That's typical tourist behavior and reflects ignorance and insecurity. In PP the Chinese noodle shops (new Chinese owned) all insist on USD (and calculate riel in USD at 4100). Too bad no good 1.5 - 2 USD dumpling and noodle shop in SHV, yet. Perhaps some smart Chinese guy sees the void and business. I would love it.

Ah, did I mention the Chinese ladies on the beach in their bikinis, last week? I could not help to lift my eyes from the book I was reading and enjoy the view of the sea. I know I am biased.
