Thailand to get tough on foreigners working without work permits, employers also targeted

Thailand is Cambodia's neighbor to the West, and this forum is dedicated to Thai news, stories, reviews, blogs, videos, Thai people and anything else related to the country. A lot of expats have both lived and worked in Cambodia and Thailand, and this area is a place to discuss all aspects of life in Thailand and what's going on there. Most topics are about Bangkok and Pattaya because of their larger populations of expatriates and tourists in those cities, but this is for all things Thai.

Post by obelisks »

Foreigners found working without a work permit face fines of between 2,000 - 100,000 THB or imprisonment of a maximum of 5 years.

this is targeted at the many many Chinese & Russian business that are on the island running tour agencies and working as tour guides
the most important provision was No 1 on the leaflet, which states: “If an employer employs a foreigner to work at a foreigner-forbidden position, the employer is fined with B400,000- 800,000 per employed foreigner.”

“This one is important because it is probably the most common one,” Mr Pitool said.

The other five provisions highlighted by the leaflet are:

• If a foreigner works in excess of the work as described in the work permit, the foreigner may be fined up to B100,000.

• If an employer allows a foreigner to work in excess of the work described in the work permit, the employer may be fined up to B400,000 per foreigner employed.

• If a foreigner works without a work permit or works in a position prohibited to foreigners, the foreigner may be fined B2,000-100,000, or imprisoned up to five years, or both.

• If a foreigner works on an urgent and essential nature without approval from a labour officer, he/she may be fined up B20,000-B100,000.

• Any person operating as a job agency for foreigners without a license may be fined B200,000-600,000, or imprisoned for one to three years, or both.

Looks like they are hitting the employees the hardest. Everyone needs to look at their work contract much better from now on.
Also, they had better check what constitutes work a Thai could do.
The poor Thais must be losing billions to those evil foreigner employees.
See crook!!!

What a stupid comment.....

All the Thais working abroad? Where exactly? Many Thais in Germany but, surprise, they need a work permit and/or residence papers. Just as is the case in pretty much most of the world.

Let me guess: some Thais took your job picking 2-Baht pineapples?

youre missing the point...
if a thai immigrant is able to steal your job, youre an unqualified bum who has failed in life

eastern europeans came over to England and ruined the building trade by doing the same work for half the price,
still...
it didnt effect my ability to get work and i never stopped working
