Before the split, I recall reading something about leave them alone until after the split was done, as you could accidently lose them while they're being 'cloned' on 2 seperate block chains or something....
Yes, now everything is safe again. After this hard-fork on 1st August you can also benefit from "Bitcoin Cash", a new currency which exists after this fork. For example when you own 1 Bitcoin before hard-fork then now you own 1 Bitcoin and 1 BCH (Bitcoin Cash). Important is that you have possibility to import your bitcoin address to a wallet application which supports Bitcoin Cash using private key.

On https://coinmarketcap.com/ you can see the current market price of each currency.
That's excellent news then, because BitCoin is doing very well, and Bitcoin Cash looks to be on its way up as well! I knew I should have been hording these things.

Bitcoin was sitting around $4400 on Sunday.
Yesterday up to over $4600.
Now is hovering between $4800 - $4900.

Will it hit a new record high of above $5000 tonight?

Imagine if you want to buy a car in Friday for $20k in bitcoins. By Monday it could cost you $40k or $20k!

Don't think so.
Let's say that one BTC = $5000. You want to buy a car worth $20,000, then you would pay 4 BTC.
If next week/month, BTC = $10,000, then you would pay only 2 BTC.

Even if you bought the car today for 4 BTC, then wanted to sell it next week for $20,000 (2 BTC), the dollar value would be the same.

Exactly
on the dark net, goods have remained the same $$ value, even thou they are paid for in bitcoin ( at whatever bit is that day) which there, is tied to the $

If you paid $5000 for your bitcoins and a car costs $20k then it has cost you 4 bits. If on Monday the price of bitcoins falls to $2500 per bitcoin you will then have to pay out 8 bitcoins, that cost you $40k so you have just lost $20k.

This is just an example to explain the huge fluctuations that will make purchases so difficult.

It already has. How many bitcoin exchanges have been hacked and/or accounts pilfered by the people who run them? Are personal digital wallets any safer?
