I'm surprised you long timers didn't get it, I don't even speak Khmer.

If you didn't act like one, I wouldn't call you one. Don't presume the underhand modding you've been doing behind the scenes has not been noticed.Username Taken wrote: ↑Tue Jun 27, 2017 10:42 amWhy oh why? Tara are you disputing the fact that eating badly in Khmer slang means what I said it did?AlonzoPartriz wrote: ↑Tue Jun 27, 2017 9:38 am To eat badly in Khmer means to be grabbing/ greedy, and it is not advised to say unless you are joking amongst friends (very telling in itself), or are a good runner.

Truly interested, as it may just be between groups of young people in PP. I was led to believe by the Khmer who told me that it was very widespread in use.

"I don't even speak Khmer."
Having lived in rural Cambodia for 16 years and being married to a bilingual Khmer lady for slightly longer and speaking fluent tho not native level Khmer, yes I dispute your claim to the false assertion that you know what you are talking about.

I put the correct idiom in my comments in karma evaluation; there is at least one other idiom which conveys the same meaning. The problem with the original English sentence is that it is too proper and becomes nebulous when translated into its proper Khmer equivalent.

Re: Why do Cambodians eat so badly?
I lived the past three years from a Bush kitchen, and the range of fruits and veggies was quite good,.
However, so much food here is fried, and worse, fried in palm oil.
Also, the Khmer diet contains much more sugar than I consider healthy.
Thirdly, even though our cook could prepare nice balanced dishes, staff would complain about too many vegetables and not enough meat until the cook caved and just grilled them meat all the time.
So that's totally an education issue.

Re: Why do Cambodians eat so badly?
Many of the negative comments here come from people who have likely never eaten any decent food in someone's house. Eating some cheap crap at a market stall is not the same thing. It's like eating from a take-away van in the UK and deciding that it's a good representation of the food there.
Silence, exile, and cunning.

Re: Why do Cambodians eat so badly?
That is not the meaning behind the idiom "sii kmok" which is being obliquely referred to by the highly proper English sentence which invites your misunderstanding. The idiom really means to eat everything with no regard to others. Sometimes this idiom is followed by
'Ot tuk aoii kee." meaning doesn't save for others.

Agree, but western food is terrible in that regard, too.Jerry Atrick wrote: ↑Tue Jun 27, 2017 3:39 pmAlso, the Khmer diet contains much more sugar than I consider healthy.
Think about all the stuff you ate as a kid...then add all the sauces, soft drinks, alcohol...there's not much in the western diet without sugar except salads, and then some clown makes salad oil with sugar in it. Read the food labels, you'll see.
Jesus loves you...Mexico is great, right?
