Death Island- Koh Tao

Thailand is Cambodia's neighbor to the West, and this forum is dedicated to Thai news, stories, reviews, blogs, videos, Thai people and anything else related to the country. A lot of expats have both lived and worked in Cambodia and Thailand, and this area is a place to discuss all aspects of life in Thailand and what's going on there. Most topics are about Bangkok and Pattaya because of their larger populations of expatriates and tourists in those cities, but this is for all things Thai.

Death Island- Koh Tao

Post by phuketrichard »

new tourist incentive,
go to Koh Tao and disappear..... :beer3:
Vanished from Koh Tao! Missing Russian Girl still not found – is the island hiding a macabre secret?

On the 15th of February 2017 Russian tourist Valentina Novozhyonova, 23, left her bungalow on Koh Tao and was never seen again. The news of the young girl’s disappearance took almost 3 weeks to emerge from the tiny island now being dubbed ‘Death Island’ by the press due to the extraordinary number of tourists who die in suspicious circumstances while holidaying there.
Of course rumours are not evidence, but there is also no smoke without fire. The general opinion of Koh Tao is now that it is a dangerous place rife with crime, run by mafia and policed by bribe-able officers who have a well-earned reputation for shoddy investigations, lying to the press, contaminating crime scenes and evidence and covering up anything that might damage the reputation of the island.

Here's another one you can add:

Yet another girl dies in strange circumstances on Koh Tao – desperate mother looking for information
http://www.samuitimes.com/yet-another-g ... formation/
Investigations into the girl’s movements reveal that she checked into the Triple B Bungalows in Mae Haad Koh Tao. During the night three of the bungalows, including the one she was staying in caught fire. The owner of the bungalows said that the fire was caused by an electrical fault and had nothing to with Elise who fled the scene. It seems the girl then walked several kilometres to Tanote Bay where she had a meal and booked herself a ticket to Bangkok for the 24th of April via Chumphon. Although Elise’s luggage arrived in Chumphon she did not. She was found several days later, dead, on a rock, in the jungle above Tanote bay, partially eaten by animals, wrapped in T-shirts.

Thanks for reminding the board that Thailand has its very own website for all of the dead tourists and expats.

Is there a site like this for Cambodia? Does anyone know of another country that has a website like this. I don't.

I think Thailand is number #1 in this regard.

That article in the Samui Times has stirred things up a bit.
Koh Tao police to reopen death case of Belgian tourist
SURAT THANI - Koh Tao police have been ordered to look into the death of a Belgian tourist found dead on Koh Tao in April again after her case was posted in social media.
Deputy Surat Thani police chief Pol Col Preecha Kladsawad on Thursday directed investigators of Koh Tao police station to reopen the investigation into the death of Elise Dallemange after her story was run on the Samui Times, an online newspaper, and later shared by the CSI LA Facebook account...

Tourist found ‘half eaten by lizard’ on Thai island was member of a ‘cult’
1 July 2017
Image
Lots of questions, and no convincing answers. Did she belong to a sect ?
Her mother’s suggest ion that Ms Dallemange was a member of a sect of what has been described as a “cult movement” in the form of controversial Indian “guru” and alleged miracle worker, Sathya Sai Baba, has put pressure on police to investigate.

According to its website, the Sathya Sai International Organisation is spread across 126 countries and includes approximately 2000 “Sathya Sai Centres”. It is said to have six million followers worldwide.
Followers believed he had supernatural powers and could perform “miraculous healings” using holy ash. They use song and meditation to “control their passions”.
He was one of India’s most powerful spiritual leaders when he was alive.
Others believed he was a conjurer in disguise and Sai Baba was plagued with accusations of sexual abuse and fraud, which he denied.
Thai police have delivered a verdict of suicide, but without proof or motive.
The devastated mum told Der Farang magazine that she has still not been delivered an autopsy report which she was promised.
“Too many things show us that someone is involved. Police told us that Elise hanged herself up in the jungle. I cannot accept why my daughter should have killed herself.

“She was normal in the last conversation and no signs of depression were visible. I don’t know why she would have booked a transfer to Bangkok and then went into the jungle to commit suicide.

Phone records show that Elise, who had a degree in medicine from the European Institute Of Medicine Natural in Brussels, called her mother on Skype on April 17 and was planning to return to Belgium.

Though unconfirmed reports suggested Ms Dallemange might have needed to flee the island quickly, in fear of her life.
She left on a Ferry April 19, but it is not known why she alighted on Koh Tao instead of continuing on to the mainland.

samui times responds to threats its being sued; good for them!!!!
After news reports emerged yesterday that the Samui Times is facing libel charges for labelling Koh Tao ‘Death Island’ the publication would like to make the following statement.

The Samui Times is not currently aware of any libel charges against the publication and has not been contacted by any members of the police, the Surat Thani governor or local officials.

With regards to labelling Koh Tao ‘death island’, this is not a label created by this publication, we have simply reported that it is a term used on social media sites and locals to describe that island that is internationally known to have a disproportionate amount of tourist deaths for its size.

The Samui Times is not responsible for the international press using this term, or for reports on deaths in anything but its own publication

a bullshit sensational piece
So after three years living in Thailand would I say it’s safe to visit? Yes, for the most part. But I'm not going to sugar-coat it. You should take extra care when visiting the country
:please:
30+ million visit each year and very very very few have any problems out side of maybe being overcharged for this or that.
