I don't know anyone personally, how would a disreputable seller cheat you. Hell, you can tell by the smell.

Find the places selling durian where you can't drive on the road because it's blocked by all the SUVs parked in the middle of the road. Buy there.

hahahaha. well, I am after the seller that do have the real Manthong variety of Durian.
Been to few street stalls, claimed that their durian are Manthong but were not.
I'd rather go to the reliable store.

I don't think most local sellers even know the variety they sell. What locals care about is its provenance : Kampot or Kompong Chan is good, Thai stuff isn't. Many sellers relabel Thai imports as Kampot/KC durian. I've never heard anyone talking about the variety.

i cant see there being much difference between the Thai version and the Khmer version...
this is a Thai หมอนทอง Mon Thong (meaning "Golden Pillow" in Thai)
