Fire burns down Mad Monkey Backpackers Hostel bungalow; Koh Rong Sanloem
During the daytime, between 4and 5pm on 14 June 2017, a fire completely destroyed a 4m x 10m 5 room hostel bungalow belonging to Mad Monkey Backpackers Hostel on Koh Rong Sanloem.
At the time, there were 9 foreign tourists staying there, 7 British nationals and 2 Canadians, including 3 women. Fortunately, all the occupants of the bungalow were away on a boat cruise when the fire broke out and rapidly destroyed the building. The cause of the fire has not been specified.
Unfortunately, some of the tourists lost some documents in the fire, including their passports, and they were obliged to make a statement to the Cambodian police before they could go to their embassies to apply for replacement passports and documents.

Didn't the Mad Monkey Backpackers in Shitsville also burn down a couple years back, or was it a different backpackers?

It was Monkey Republic on the road to Serendipity. Those monkeys don't have much luck.

I'm just going to stay safe and avoid any place with "monkey" in their name. There's a jinx on them.

I'd stay away from anywhere with elephant in the name too.
Rampaging elephant smashes down Indian family's house as they slept... then returns to lift wreckage from trapped baby after hearing its screams.

These ramshackle wooden beach-side joints have been burning down all over SEA for decades. It's surprising there aren't more instances of it recently what with the increase in fire twirling poi swinging flame blowing long haired smoking dirty hippies invading the region.

And if you want to be really safe, avoid countries that have pictures of monkeys on billboards everywhere.
Cambodia,,,, Don't fall in love with her.
Like the spoilt child she is, she will not be happy till she destroys herself from within and breaks your heart.

I don't believe there are fire trucks on the island ever. I stayed in the Monkey hotel in Kampot, it was pretty good although badly designed with no ceiling fans. Why do hotel operators want people to use AC?
