Group of Thieves Finally Arrested After Robbing Australian of Her MacBook in Phnom Penh, Cambodia

Cambodia news in English! Here you'll find all the breaking news from Cambodia translated into English for our international readership and expat community to read and comment on. The majority of our news stories are gathered from the local Khmer newspapers, but we also bring you newsworthy media from Cambodia before you read them anywhere else. Because of the huge population of the capital city, most articles are from Phnom Penh, but Siem Reap, Sihanoukville, and Kampot often make the headlines as well. We report on all arrests and deaths of foreigners in Cambodia, and the details often come from the Cambodian police or local Khmer journalists. As an ASEAN news outlet, we also publish regional news and events from our neighboring countries. We also share local Khmer news stories that you won't find in English anywhere else. If you're looking for a certain article, you may use our site's search feature to find it quickly.

Phnom Penh, Cambodia: Four thieves who were known to target foreigners in Phnom Penh were arrested and charged with aggravated theft, weapons possession and drug use yesterday.

Prosecutors at Phnom Penh Municipal Court said the thieves stole two mobile phones from an Austrian man and a laptop from an Australian woman over the weekend in their latest attacks.

Ny Savuth, a police officer in Daun Penh district, said the group had stolen many other items in the past.

“They would drive around on motorbikes, snatching phones, bags, money or jewellery from other people on motorbikes, especially foreign tourists,” he said.

“They were arrested after tourists filed police complaints.”

After the arrests, police seized the two stolen mobile phones and the laptop and returned them to their owners.

Police also confiscated a motorbike, two knives, two axes, a small package of crystal methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia.

The suspects were identified as Suon Vith, 22, Van Ny, 25, Chea Eng, 27, and Van Chan, 35.

[ADMIN EDIT: THIS DID NOT HAPPEN AT THE PLANTATION URBAN RESORT AND SPA, ALTHOUGH THE WOMAN WHO WAS ROBBED WAS STAYING THERE. ACCORDING TO THE PLANTATION, THEIR GUEST WAS ROBBED NEAR THE NAGA CLINIC. AS FAR AS WE KNOW, BASED ON THE PLANTATION'S REPUTATION, IT IS A VERY SAFE HOTEL WITH GOOD SECURUTY, AND THERE HAVE NEVER BEEN REPORTS OF ANY ROBBERIES ON THEIR PREMISES. WE HAVE UPDATED THE TITLE OF THIS TOPIC TO REFLECT THE MOST ACCURATE REPORTS.]

So is she Austrian or Australian? I know, we all look alike to you...

Edit: My bad, I see now it was an Austrian AND an Australian. Sounds like the start of a TEFL joke.

From the Khmer news, it sounds like they were just doing a bunch of bag snatching in the streets in popular areas with tourists.

Why does the headline say Plantation? Maybe it happened in front of the hotel?

That's what it sounds like. She was staying there.

I spoke to the GM of Plantation. The lady was a guest at the hotel but the laptop was stolen outside, somewhere near Naga Clinic.
