Seven missing after USS Fitzgerald collides with merchant ship off Japan
17 June 2017
Seven US navy sailors are missing and three others are being treated for injuries after their destroyer collided with a container ship off the east coast of Japan on Saturday morning.

US and Japanese rescue teams were continuing their search for the missing crew members – who have not been named – more than 12 hours after the USS Fitzgerald collided with the ACX Crystal, a Philippine-registered container ship, about 62 miles (100km) south-west of the military port city of Yokosuka.

Initial fears that the guided missile destroyer was at risk of sinking receded after US navy officials said flooding in three damaged sections of the vessel had been brought under control.

Three people aboard the destroyer were medically evacuated, including its commanding officer, Commander Bryce Benson, who was reportedly in a stable condition after being airlifted to the US naval hospital at the Yokosuka base, the navy said...

- Sailors missing after the USS Fitzgerald collided with container ship off Japan have been found dead, the US Navy and Japanese media says.
The collision happened early on Saturday, and a search began for the seven missing sailors, as a helicopter evacuated three injured crew.
The US Navy said rescue workers found the bodies on Sunday after gaining access to damaged parts of the ship. It said they will be taken to a Japanese hospital to be identified.

The incident took place some 56 nautical miles (104km) south-west of the Japanese port city of Yokosuka, at about 02:30 local time on Saturday (17:30 GMT Friday).
The Navy ship’s starboard side was heavily damaged in the collision, but the vessel later managed to slowly return to its base in Yokosuka, with the assistance of US navy tug boats. BBC

The reason for the accident is not yet clear, but the destroyer USS Fitzgerald came off worse in the collision, while the container ship, the ACX Crystal, continued on its route to Tokyo.

Amazing how a ship brimming with radars and electronic equipment managed to overlook a huge container ship....

This is the problem with technology and smart bombs.

You still have fuckwits using it.

It hasn't been a good week for Murika, has it?

First their great navy is surprised by an almost invisible ship (cue: In the navy, Village People), possibly in the middle of a gay romp by the crew, then Otter Warmbier turns into Otto ice-Coldbeer.

Just a question that's been bugging me...what kind of extra-retarded US citizen thinks a trip to N. Korea is a good idea, let alone removing political posters?

Power-driven boats crossing

A boat approaching from your starboard (right) side has right of way. If you are approaching another boat from its starboard side, you have right of way. However, if the other boat does not give way, you must take action to avoid a collision.

Also the tonnage law will always apply. The container ship was the ''stand on vessel''. Not the most responsive helm either. A court martial is in order. Simply no excxuse for either captain.
