For those of you in Galway there is a screening next week:

5 October 2018
Club Scannán Sailearna will screen the documentary Cambodian Spring on Thursday next, October 11, starting at 8.15pm. The documentary, made by Irish film-maker Chris Kelly will be shown in Seanscoil Sailearna, Indreabhán.

Cambodian Spring is an intimate and unique portrait of three people caught up in the chaotic and often violent development that is shaping modern-day Cambodia, as they fight to save their homes from the bulldozers.

Shot over six years, the film charts the growing wave of land-rights protests that led to the ‘Cambodian Spring’ and the tragic events that followed. This documentary is about the complexities – political and personal – of fighting for your beliefs.

This critically acclaimed work has picked up numerous awards on the international film festival circuit already and is a must-see for anybody who believes in the power of protest to rectify society’s wrongs.

Northern Ireland man behind documentary A Cambodian Spring nominated for Bafta
10 January, 2019 01:00
NORTHERN Ireland film-maker Chris Kelly has been nominated in the Outstanding Debut category at this year's Baftas for his feature documentary A Cambodian Spring.

The film which received lottery funding from the Arts Council of Northern Ireland through Northern Ireland Screen, took more than 10 years to complete, including six years Chis spent living and filming in Cambodia. It features an original soundtrack by electronic artist James Holden.

The film is an intimate portrait of three people caught up in the wave of land-rights protests against controversial ongoing building development in Cambodia which began at the start of this century. The film is about the complexities – both political and personal, of fighting for what you believe in.

"I am absolutely thrilled to be nominated for this award,” Chris said. "I hope that this nomination brings some much deserved attention to the situation in Cambodia and the ongoing work of the film subjects."

Richard Williams, chief executive of Northern Ireland Screen, said: “We are absolutely delighted for Chris on his Bafta nomination – this is a debut well worth honouring. A Cambodian Spring is a wonderful film and we are proud to have been able to support it.”

The EE British Academy Film Awards take place on February 10 in London.

James Holden releasing score for Chris Kelly’s documentary A Cambodian Spring
Published on
January 10, 2019
Listen to an ethereal excerpt from track ‘Solidarity Theme (Release)’ now.

James Holden will release his first ever film score, the soundtrack to Chris Kelly’s documentary A Cambodian Spring, this January.

A Cambodian Spring centres around a lakeside community in Phnomh Penh fighting to save their homes from destruction by developers.

Holden’s solo soundtrack is a departure from his more recent collaborative projects such as 2017’s The Animal Spirits and heavily features the Prophet-600 synthesiser that dominated Holden’s 2013 album The Inheritors. The score will be released on Holden’s own Border Community imprint.

The score also features a knackered Hammond organ that fell apart during the recording, the sounds of which can be heard on three-part composition ‘Disintegration Drone’.

Pre-order a copy of the A Cambodian Spring OST here ahead of its 25th January release. Check out the cover art, track list and a trailer for the film below.
