$100 tips

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! We also have some Khmer members here as well, but English is the main language used on CEO. You're welcome to have a look around, and if you decide you want to participate, you can become a part our international expat community by signing up for a free account.

$100 tips

Post by Duncan »

My sister-in-law ? who is 7 months pregnant and is still working in a popular restaurant here in PP. Today she tells me a customer gave her a $100 tip. to spend on the baby.
I know some of the expats here are on good salaries so what size tip are you giving to bar and restaurant staff ?
Cambodia,,,, Don't fall in love with her.
Like the spoilt child she is, she will not be happy till she destroys herself from within and breaks your heart.

A dollar. If they are good. Mind you I gave the toothless mental lady at the beach 10000r, but that was so that she didn't fuck me. That's an exception.

I seldom tip more than 10% at the better places ( restaurnts) in Bars only the Riel left over if less than $1.
if u start tipping more they tend to expect it from u every time u go there
In a nation run by swine, all pigs are upward-mobile and the rest of us are fucked until we can put our acts together: not necessarily to win, but mainly to keep from losing completely. HST

I gave a tuk tuk driver $100 once. I thought I was giving him $1 - it was dark and I was in a hurry - I only realised once I'd had dinner and went to pay. Far out I was annoyed at myself.

And there is nothing wrong that. I tip rather generously in my usual haunts. As a result I never wait for a cold beer.

I think tipping someone you know and like is a bit different to just popping in somewhere and eating or drinking. A question to our American members- do you tip the same here as you do in the US?

Well, I tip everywhere and don't buy into the "don't tip them, or it will spoil them" logic. But then I have worked in hospitality business for 30+ years and may be biased.

^^Same here, I lived off of tips in my mid teens since the U.S. pays $2/hour for servers. Because of that I've always tipped a lot, even moto parking I usually give 1000 riel.

When in Battambang I would occasionally go out with some Khmer contacts. Tipping $100 was standard with them. It was a face thing.

I normally tip a dollar or two depending on how long my session is.

I have seen a very well known lawyer here in Phnom Penh regularly tip staff with $100 bills.
