Cambodia news in English! Here you'll find all the breaking news from Cambodia translated into English for our international readership and expat community to read and comment on. The majority of our news stories are gathered from the local Khmer newspapers, but we also bring you newsworthy media from Cambodia before you read them anywhere else. Because of the huge population of the capital city, most articles are from Phnom Penh, but Siem Reap, Sihanoukville, and Kampot often make the headlines as well. We report on all arrests and deaths of foreigners in Cambodia, and the details often come from the Cambodian police or local Khmer journalists. As an ASEAN news outlet, we also publish regional news and events from our neighboring countries. We also share local Khmer news stories that you won't find in English anywhere else. If you're looking for a certain article, you may use our site's search feature to find it quickly.

They should abolish the courts and let the Alan Parkhouses freely decide.

James Ricketson eyes royal pardon after verdict
7 September 2018
Jailed Australian filmmaker James Ricketson’s lawyer said yesterday that he was preparing a letter to be sent to the Cambodian government seeking a royal pardon for his client.

The 69-year-old was sentenced to six years in prison after being found guilty of “espionage of information prejudicial to national defence” by the Phnom Penh Municipal Court last Friday.

The trial was widely condemned as having little evidence from the prosecution to support the charge.

Defence lawyer Kong Sam Onn said the request would likely be submitted early next week.

“We have decided to request a royal pardon. [The request] needs certain documents in order for it to be sent to Samdech Prime Minister [HE]. We are preparing the documentation and we will likely submit it early next week,” he said on Thursday.

Open letter to Marise Payne: Will Australia let James Ricketson unjustly spend 6 years in Cambodian prison?
By Elaine Pearson [Elaine Pearson is the Australia director at Human Rights Watch.]
Updated yesterday at 10:34pm

Dear Foreign Minister,

Human Rights Watch writes to urge you to press the Cambodian Government to quash the conviction and immediately release imprisoned Australian journalist and filmmaker James Ricketson.

We ask you to publicly denounce his trial and six-year sentence for what it is: farcical legal proceedings on bogus espionage charges.

The muted response thus far by the Australian Government to Ricketson's conviction follows what had been more than a year of wholly ineffectual "quiet diplomacy" pursued by previous Foreign Minister Julie Bishop.

Australia's "quietly, softly" approach to human rights diplomacy in South-East Asia seems to have made it easier for Cambodia's Government to ignore "soft messages" from Australia and confidently jail an Australian citizen without a credible basis for 14 months without fear of repercussions.

During the seven-day criminal trial that ended on August 31, no evidence was produced that demonstrated Ricketson had committed espionage.

Australia has yet to condemn a prosecution widely seen as a politically motivated attempt by the Cambodian Government of Prime Minister HE to silence independent journalists in the country ahead of the discredited election on July 29.
