Dealing with chemical weapons and remnants of war

Committee to tackle legacy of chemical weapons

Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Tea Banh has set up a new committee tasked with getting rid of chemical weapons and remnants of war from the 1970s that are still being discovered in Cambodia.

The committee will set up a team charged with deciding how to destroy chemical weapons, such as barrel bombs filled with tear gas, which have been found mostly in the north-eastern province of Mondulkiri in Sen Monorom and O’Raing Ov districts, which border Vietnam.

Mr Borith said the committee marked a turning point in the country’s approach to cleaning up the aftermath of war. “This meeting was the first time Cambodia has addressed the negative impact from Agent Orange used by the US during the Vietnam War,” he said.
“Such chemical contamination continues to hurt us today. It affects our people’s health. We will look to draft a plan and seek foreign donors, especially America, given the US Air Force used Agent Orange during the Vietnam War.”

Mr Borith suggested Cambodia’s debt to the US should be considered as part of any arrangement.
“The US may look to help us by converting Cambodia’s debt to the US to address the impact of these chemical weapons,” he said. “Cambodia may raise this issue with the US in future.”

It's good to having many eye witness's in case something goes wrong.
Cambodia,,,, Don't fall in love with her.
Like the spoilt child she is, she will not be happy till she destroys herself from within and breaks your heart.

Although it can end it having a lot of witnesses eyes rolling around when something goes wrong...

What colour where their eyes, Bob? Blue. One blew over here, one blew over there...

The report explained how biological weapons, radioactive and nuclear contaminated material had also been found in other parts of Cambodia.
That sounds ever so slightly exaggerated, and I'd question how many chemical weapons are around either. There were some found earlier in the year (CS Gas), but those are the only ones I remember hearing about.
Silence, exile, and cunning.

as if an accident with any of the officials would be such a great loss.
Odds are it was carefully inspected by some nothing person before the crooks, erm officials got near it. And you can bet they split pronto after. This seems to me to be just another imitation of doing something to justify hand outs or get pats on the back.
Likely someone will sell the CS or anything they can :)

Suspected US aircraft bomb found in Takeo
23 June 2017
A 350-kg M117 aircraft bomb believed to have been dropped during the US’s carpet bombing of Cambodia was uncovered in Takeo province’s Tram Kak district yesterday by local residents, an official said.

Cambodian Mine Action Centre (CMAC) Director Heng Ratana said villagers discovered the large bomb buried 5 metres deep while excavating land for a pond. He said it was likely left behind from the US bombardment of Cambodia’s countryside during the Vietnam War.

"We have brought the bomb to a safe area,” Ratana said, explaining it was a rare find for CMAC, which is still working to clear the countryside. “It is very common to receive reports, [but an] M117 is not very common. We have only found three of them this year.”...

Farmer unearths 28 bombs
3 Juy 2017
A farmer in Oddar Meanchey province discovered a cache of unexploded bombs on Saturday while excavating part of his land to create a pond for irrigation.
A provincial police report said the 28 unexploded ordnances were discovered in Kon Kriel commune.

The farmer notified local authorities, who then enlisted the help of provincial police to pull in anti-mines NGO Halo Trust.

Halo Trust administration manager Sieng Sokvy confirmed that the bombs found on Saturday were destroyed at the site.
“We already destroyed them,” he said. “Our staff went there along with the police and the villagers that own the land.

Glad they addressed the issues i had about letting them off the money. Ie them nicking it out of the budget to buy lots of new cars. But the US have given $120,000,000 up till now for uxo clearance. They are, or were, the biggest donors. Did they ever pay war remunerations? I seem to remember they did.
