Scandal: Cash for promotions alleged.
Shocking allegations of cash given in exchange for job promotions within the Agriculture Ministry are to be scrupulously investigated and legal action will be taken over any revelations of bribery and corruption.
Ministry rejects cash for promotions claim
26 May 2017
- The Agriculture Ministry has rejected claims officials paid thousands of dollars in exchange for promotions.
It said the department had ordered an urgent investigation into allegations officials used the names of senior ministry leaders to force some civil servants to pay large sums for job appointments.
It also called on officials to take action to prevent such abuses and report any incidences of bribery so appropriate legal action could be taken.
Anyone who uses the names of ministry representatives to exploit others is cheating, the ministry said, warning employees at all levels to be careful of “bad people”.
“If anyone receives information relating to the above case, please take action to prevent it and file a complaint with the relevant authorities to take action immediately,” it said.
San Chey, executive director of the Affiliated Network for Social Accountability Cambodia, said allegations of this kind had emerged before, but no government department has ever proven whether such bribery was taking place.
