Why don't people say goodbye?
Why don't people say goodbye?
Is it just us or have others experienced this?
We will be out with people and notice that someone has left. We assume they've gone to the loo or to make a phone call - but after half an hour or so you realise they've actually left without saying goodbye.
All our friends have done it at one time or more, so we assume it's another of those "Khmer things" or are our friends just particularly rude?
If you did this in Australia you wouldn't get invited back!

Are you saying only your Cambodian friends do this? I've noticed expat friends doing this. I just assumed it was a British thang.rozzieoz wrote:

"Life is too important to take seriously."

Re: Why don't people say goodbye?
Can't say I've ever really experienced this, some Cambodians make a big deal of saying goodbye with a "chum reap lea", wai'ing, wishing good luck and generally dragging the farewell out, others just a quick "joop k'near" and a wave. I find foreigners I know in Cambodia are more likely to sneak off without a goodbye, especially if out drinking.

Re: Why don't people say goodbye?
None of our Khmer friends or crew would leave without saying goodbye, they all seem to enjoy the informal ceremony of the moment. Some of our expat mates are dodgy though!

Guilty as charged. When it is time to go, it is time to go.sneak off without a goodbye, especially if out drinking.

I'm the same. If you say goodbye people always expect you to stay for "just one more" which turns into several.hanno wrote:Guilty as charged. When it is time to go, it is time to go.sneak off without a goodbye, especially if out drinking.
Easier to just disappear and blame it on the alcohol.

They also expect you to pay your end of the tab...kiwiincambodia wrote: ↑Wed May 24, 2017 5:05 pm If you say goodbye people always expect you to stay for "just one more" which turns into several.

No shit! My foreign (British & American) ex-friends here in China were great at disappearing from the bar... leaving me with the bill.StroppyChops wrote: ↑Wed May 24, 2017 5:10 pmThey also expect you to pay your end of the tab...kiwiincambodia wrote: ↑Wed May 24, 2017 5:05 pm If you say goodbye people always expect you to stay for "just one more" which turns into several.

No problem there. I never have nor never will ever skip on a bill.StroppyChops wrote: ↑Wed May 24, 2017 5:10 pmThey also expect you to pay your end of the tab...kiwiincambodia wrote: ↑Wed May 24, 2017 5:05 pm If you say goodbye people always expect you to stay for "just one more" which turns into several.

We are usually the ones paying so that's not an issue.StroppyChops wrote:They also expect you to pay your end of the tab...kiwiincambodia wrote: ↑Wed May 24, 2017 5:05 pm If you say goodbye people always expect you to stay for "just one more" which turns into several.
