Saw something in my newsfeed in the last week to the contrary, but too lazy and disinterested to go looking for it. Perversely, not too disinterested to comment here.

On the Giant Panda:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Giant_panda

The big critter in truly dire straits is the Amur Leopard, almost extinct in the wild.

The solution would be to introduce a few breeding pairs into the Korean DMZ, having first stocked the DMZ with a fast-reproducing prey species like wild pigs.

On the Bokator-Rama on Abacus Road in SR, it'll be interesting to see how many Lexi and Range Rovers will be parked outside on fight nights and whether the
place survives - it certainly cost a lot to build and it looks very handsome. Abacus Road is, if anything, oversupplied with entertainment venues with a platoon
of bored lovelies sitting patiently at the portals of each; one closed its doors not long after it opened.

Master leaves l’bokator venue
7 June 2017
Less than a month after opening, a Siem Reap restaurant and club showcasing the Cambodian martial art of l’bokator has dismissed its most visible partner.

Grandmaster San Kimsean, the founder of the Bokator Academy and the Bokator Federation, is no longer involved in the club, citing a dispute with the owner over the pay provided to fighters.

At a grand opening event on May 18, featuring l’bokator performances and a ribbon-cutting ceremony, Kimsean told The Post the venue would be a place to give fighters opportunities to earn money while also spreading knowledge of the sport. Since then, however, he said that disagreements arose over their pay, while a manager at the restaurant accuses Kimsean of recruiting unqualified fighters for matches.

According to the manager, Pich Veasna, there will still be l’bokator matches at the venue on Saturdays.
“The fighters he brought were inexperienced and could not give us good matches. We could not sell the ticket to the customer to see such matches,” Veasna said...

New book traces bokator’s historic roots
3 July 2017
- As Cambodia awaits Unesco’s verdict on Angkor-era bokator getting its due as a World Heritage tangible asset of humanity, a new book on the martial art was released three days ago to enhance its historic, cultural and social impact on the Kingdom’s way of life.

Penned by 70-year-old grandmaster San Kim Sean, who after the brutal Khmer Rouge regime in the 1970s revived bokator to its present status as a national treasure, the book offers spectacular insight into how and why this particular fighting style has been such an integral part of Cambodian life for well over 1,000 years.

According to the National Olympic Committee of Cambodia (NOCC), the book serves the dual purpose of documenting bokator’s history over the centuries and makes a strong case as to why it should be promoted among the next generations and preserved as a tangible asset of humanity.

“It has taken me more than 10 years to complete this work. Artefacts in the Angkor Wat temple complex depict hundreds of techniques of which I have chosen a bunch of traditional ones to highlight while tracing the roots of bokator as deeply as possible,” Kim Sean told The Post from Siem Reap, where he heads the Kingdom’s first bokator academy.

For anyone interested in Cambodian martial arts and bokator in particular, there's a documentary called Surviving Bokator being screened in Phnom Penh this week.
Even as Cambodia vigorously pursues its bid to seek UNESCO recognition for bokator as an intangible cultural asset of humanity, a 97-minute documentary on this unique Angkor-era fighting style is set for a 6pm premiere at the Chaktomouk Conference Hall on Thursday.

Produced by Canadian filmmaker Mark J Bochsler and his wife Sandra, and titled Surviving Bokator, admission for the screening is free for those who arrive first to occupy half of the 570-seat theatre. After this, 5,000 riel will be charged for admission.

There are two more free showings planned over the next two days, first at Diamond Island (Koh Pich) at 6pm on Friday and at the French Institute at 3pm on Saturday.

Addressing a media conference in the company of National Olympic Committee of Cambodia secretary-general Vath Chamroeun and well known Bokator revivalist and grandmaster San Kimsean, director/cinematographer Bochsler said the documentary was eight years in the making and involved nearly five years of sporadic filming producing 400 hours of footage in all.

Bokator on SEA Games list
April 4, 2018
Bokator, Cambodia’s traditional martial art, has been submitted for inclusion on the official sporting discipline list for the 2023 Phnom Penh Southeast Asian Games, with reports yesterday suggesting the inclusion was supported by Laos, Vietnam, and Myanmar.

National Olympic Committee of Cambodia secretary general Vath Chamroeun told sources that Cambodia will dispatch coaches to ASEAN countries to train athletes, and from the year 2020, while the Cambodia Bokator Federation will hold ASEAN level competitions.

The resurgence of Bokator in recent years bodes well for the kingdom and is largely thanks to the work of the NOCC and San Kim Sean, renowned as the father of modern bokator and credited with reviving the art. Cambodia has long pursued the fighting styles’ inclusion on the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage list.

Ancient martial art that spawned Muay Thai undergoes a rebirth in Cambodia thanks to a tireless grandmaster
Thought to date back 2,000 years and depicted on temple walls at Angkor, bokator was almost wiped out by the Khmer Rouge. One man, San Kim Sean, has devoted his life to reviving it, and slowly but surely it is gaining recognition
PUBLISHED : Tuesday, 17 April, 2018, 6:46pm

Grandmaster San Kim Sean closes his soft brown eyes and pauses. He takes a sharp breath and forces a smile before recalling how he survived the hell that Cambodia was plunged into during the Pol Pot-led Khmer Rouge regime from 1975 to 1979. During that time, almost a quarter of the country’s population perished.

The grandmaster sits on a stool in the centre of his bokator academy in Siem Reap, a basic set-up with a tin roof, whirling ceiling fans, training mats, some battered wooden benches and a stash of ageing wooden weapons propped up in a corner. He becomes animated as he talks about his lifelong passion for the traditional Cambodian martial art, whose name translates as “pounding of the lion”.

“Bokator belongs to our great-great-grandfathers, masters and kings,” says the 73-year-old, who started learning the martial art at the age of 13.

Steeped in history, bokator is believed to have been developed about 2,000 years ago. Evidence of its widespread use can be found in etchings on the walls and other religious monuments of Cambodia’s 12th-century Angkor Wat temple complex.

“Angkor Wat was created to protect the country and the Khmer empire,” San Kim Sean says. “They built up a strong army that used bokator.”

He says that while regional sports such as Muay Thai (Thai boxing) are famous throughout the world, their origins come from bokator. This is because the Khmer empire covered vast swathes of Southeast Asia, including large parts of Thailand, during its peak in the 12th and 13th centuries.

“Bokator is the original,” he says with pride.
