Many foreigner owned bars in Thailand and the Philippines are not intended to make a profit; at least not openly. They sell multiple shares, up to 500% to gullible investors, never declare a profit, then sell out later and move on to the next project. Investors receive nothing, as they are told the money is gone. I'm aware of several well known, but now defunct, bars here that have used the same modus operandi.

A professionally designed and run bar has a chance of being profitable. A "hobby bar" by someone who has zero experience is unlikely to be profitable or succeed in any way. Pretty simple really.
I think bar owners are usually very smart to be able to manage bar !
