Poipet casinos, the Chinese gamblers, the kidnappings, the extortion.

Post by CEOCambodiaNews »

- Four suspected Chinese mafia members were charged yesterday with kidnapping a woman for ransom over a gambling debt.

Interior Ministry police officer Kong Sothy said Wang Zuchao, 47, Zhu Liulin, 44, Sun Tao, 35, and Cheng Aizhen, 62, persuaded Yang Fang from China to gamble at Cambodian casinos. He said the four brought Ms. Yang, 38, to casinos in Poipet town on the Thai border.

She gambled away all her money and borrowed more than $20,000 to keep playing. But she lost that too.
“Because she could not pay them back, the suspects kidnapped her,” Mr. Sothy said.
“After detaining the woman, they repeatedly phoned her husband in China and ordered him to send the money in exchange for her release,” he said.

The husband called the Chinese embassy in Cambodia. Officials reported the kidnap to Interior Ministry police.
Mr. Sothy said the four were arrested after police raided a hotel in Poipet and rescued Ms. Yang from one of the rooms...

In a separate case, four alleged Chinese mafia members were arrested on March 5, accused of kidnapping three Chinese casino gamblers.
Again, they were accused of extorting money from their families in exchange for their release in Poipet.
After their arrests, military police rescued the victims.
