Kickoff for Cambodia's Women's Aussie Rules team
Women make history with Asian Aussie Rules

After nearly two months of intensive training, the newly formed Cambodian Apsaras, the kingdoms first women’s Australian Rules Football team, will face off against the Vietnamese Gaels tomorrow in the first game of its kind in the region.
The Apsaras formed early last month in conjunction with the men’s team with a huge amount of community support that has grown, captain Hannah Slaughter says.
Training ramped up in the lead up to tomorrow’s game at the International School of Phnom Penh sports fields, with theory sessions being accompanied by physical training almost every night in the past week, according to Slaughter.
Despite the team knowing Vietnamese Gaels will be a strong force,[co-captain Neat] Khin said her Cambodian team-mates will use their small size and agility to their advantage.
“Khmer girls, we all make jokes to barang saying we’re not scared because they are tall and big, because we’re short and quick,” she said with a laugh. “So even though the foreigners are tall and big, we can just go around them.”
With the players on the team being involved in forging the identity of the new team every step of the way, Mason said win or lose, the game will be a triumph for the Apsaras.

Eagles down the Swans in Aussie rules thriller
Wed, 13 September 2017
Cambodian Eagles recorded a thrilling three-point victory over Vietnam Swans in Ho Chi Minh City on Saturday to help give Australian rules football a big boost in the region.
After leading by as many as six goals in the first half, the Eagles were swamped late in the match. They fell behind and looked beaten until Scotsman Duncan Smith pounced on a loose ball in the middle of the pitch to score the winner from 50 metres out.
