Sihanoukville: Belgian Maarten Schoonjans and German Thomas Rorich arrested for overstaying visa.
Maarten Schoonjans, Thomas Rorich.
13 Feburary 2017. Two foreign men were arrested for expired visas at 2pm at their place of residence, Group 11, Village3, Sangkat 2,Sihanoukville.
35yo Belgian, Maarten Schoonjans, was due to renew his visa last month on 9 January 2017.
[ Questions: A 36 day overstay isn't usually a drama,is it ? And if the visa's stamped "Used", doesn't that mean he got another visa ?]
49yo German, Thomas Rorich, has overstayed his visa by nearly a year, since it expired 24 Feburary 2016.
It looks like Rorich has a sort of temporary passport, presumably as a replacement for his passport , issued for 1 year, by the German Embassy in Phnom Penh.
[ Yet he can't have lost his passport, because he also has an expired visa from the year before - see photo - or perhaps it is just a photocopy of his visa ? This visa has not been stamped "Used".]

All Visas on Arrival/Extensions of stay less than 6 months are stamped used, as they are only valid for single (initial) entry.A 36 day overstay isn't usually a drama,is it ?
And if it's stamped "Used", doesn't that mean he got another visa ?
You'll notice the second visa pictured, which was a multiple entry visa, is not stamped used, if he'd extended then it would have been.
I'm guessing they were not initially apprehended due to visa overstays, most people caught overstaying have done something else to warrant the attention of the authorities.

Cops do the rounds of all guesthouses that don't provide the info to the Sangkats every year, its going on right now, so easy to get caught out that way.PSD-Kiwi wrote:All Visas on Arrival/Extensions of stay less than 6 months are stamped used, as they are only valid for single (initial) entry.A 36 day overstay isn't usually a drama,is it ?

Europeans to be deported
Preah Sihanouk provincial immigration police arrested two Europeans yesterday for overstaying their visas and said the pair will be deported.
Provincial immigration police chief Khun Sorithy said the two men were arrested in their apartment in Pi commune and were later sent to the general immigration department.
The police report said Schoonjans Maarten, a 36-year-old Belgian who overstayed his visa by 35 days, and Rorich Tomas, a 50-year-old German who overstayed by 354 days, were arrested and sent to Phnom Penh for further questioning.
Major General Uk Haiseila, the chief investigator at the Interior Ministry’s immigration department, confirmed that the two men were being held by immigration police.
He was unable to give a timetable for when they would be deported, saying it depended on whether the men had enough money to pay for their flights home.
“We are going to deport them. Whenever they have money to buy a flight ticket, we will deport them on that day,” he said.

I recognise this German guy, Thomas. If my memory isn't fried, he used to have a business on Otres, has a dog and a jeep, and might have more recently been selling tickets in Orcheateal.
