More than 20 killed, 60 injured in New Year road accidents
Despite the horrific death and accident road toll this Chinese New Year, it is actually an improvement on last year's figures.
More than 20 die in New Year accidents
More than 20 people were killed and 60 were injured in traffic accidents over the first two days of the Lunar New Year, a nearly 30 percent decline in fatalities compared with the same period last year.
According to a National Police report, 38 traffic accidents across the country on Friday and Saturday left 22 people dead and 60 injured, including 38 seriously.
There were 16 fewer accidents, a 30 percent decline, than the 54 seen over the same period in 2016. The number of deaths and injuries fell by 27 percent and 41 percent respectively when compared with the 30 deaths and 102 injuries reported last year.
Speeding, drunk driving, overtaking, sleepiness and failing to respect other vehicles on the road were listed as the main reasons for the accidents that damaged 41 motorbikes and 22 cars.
Most of the accidents happened in Phnom Penh as well as Kampong Speu, Kampot, Kratie, Mondulkiri, Banteay Meanchey, Kandal, Pursat, Takeo, Kep, Kampong Chhnang and Prey Veng provinces.
Run Rathveasna, a director of the Interior Ministry’s department of public order, appealed to everyone to respect the traffic law, be careful while driving, forgive and respect each other and especially, not to drive drunk...
