Not when compared to New York where the OP is from.Username Taken wrote:^^^ Do you think Cambodia is void of materialism? Cambodia is the epicenter of materialism! Even poor people have smart phones and facebook accounts.

I agree w/ you! I think difference is you can have both in Cambodia-- Rural and city life. But in cambodia the materialism works for me --- now i can afford everything, and more!

I don't necessarily disagree with that except that it's important to remember that there are no land lines where I live in rural Cambodia. Mobile phones are a necessity. Most of the phones sold in our village are used Chinese junk.

No I live in Fort Lauderdale at the moment, it use to be cheap, laid back beach living but prices have went through the roof last couple years, and it just gets more and more crowded. A lot of people would love to have your two month vacation but you have to put up with those god awful winters up there, I'd live in Japan too where my gf is from but fuck all that cold weather I'm a tropical person. Correct me if I'm wrong but I didn't think teachers in the US made that good of money or is it better than I think?BklynBoy wrote:Youngerish is a great way to describe it! ..Earning my money in the US is a 10 month situation and all i think about is those 2 months that i can put my feet up. I need to physically be in the school.. its not distance learning or anything. Can't do it via skype or whatever. I suppose i can just make the full time jump and if its not a good fit for me then come back and go back to the 2 month thing ... not like its written in stone--- .. Are you located in Cambodia as well?Seasquatch wrote:You sound like you're in my position except I don't get the 2 months off(to bad you didn't get them in winter), I get my 2-3 weeks to Japan to see the gf's family and my friends, and a couple weekend local trips, even taking that time off is a major pain in the ass for me as I still have to take calls. I'm a similar age too, I'd like to live abroad in Asia while I'm still "youngerish."BklynBoy wrote:thats great man... you sound like me..or I sound like you. I am 44 and just love it out there bro. So you don't work at all while in cambo? I would love to do that for a longer time period. I just have the summers --- more and more its just not enough for me. 2 months... I dont want to lose my apartment in brooklyn and have roommates so trying to work it out. Thanks for sharing as I am curious how others do it. Curious--- what kind of profession allows you to do that? you work on a boat or something?Jamie_Lambo wrote:yeah i am lucky in the sense i do have family that put me up,BklynBoy wrote:
Lambo,
Curious-- if you go back/forth where do you stay when home? I assume you have family that puts you up? Asking because trying to decide what makes the most sense for me personally. I have a rent controlled apt in brooklyn w/ roommates and would love to keep it. Currently I travel for approx 2 months -- Summers then go back to cold ass nyc to work. I am debating about making a bigger jump.
Do you pay any bills in your homeland while your in cambo?
it would be too much of a ball ache if i had to look for a new apartment every time i go back, and it wouldnt be very cost efficient if i kept an apartment while im away, as im usually away for most of the year,
now im about to hit 30 i may start doing it the other way round for a few years and spending a bit more time in england and just coming over for a few months in the winter, and getting a decent wedge of cash behind me so when it does come to a stage when i want to make a permanent move out here i would have enough to set up a business or at least buy my own place etc
its the smarter thing to do as im still young when it comes to men in asia,
but im just an empty shell of a man when im back in england, my heart and soul stay here lol
I actually just emailed you as well to ask.
thanks again
I've been looking at starting a business abroad for a while, more and more I read about it the more off putting it seems. I know an older gentlemen down in Costa Rica, been living, running businesses down there for 25 years, I go have beers with him and pick his brain, his advise he has gave me repeatedly is - earn your money in the US then come down and put your feet up. I'm starting to lean towards that advise.
I still can't help to feel this pull over there, to live a more simple/less complicated life, I think what I hate most about the West is the materialism.

@BklynBoy, sorry if this question came off sounding a little rude, I'm usually multitasking in the mornings when I'm posting. What I mean to ask is I thought teaching was one of those jobs that doesn't pay what it should in the US(otherwise underappreciated,) you sound like you have good credentials would you take that much of a paycut teaching abroad in Asia?

Money is not the problem, the problem is no money
Re: Sihanoukville bars with tourist females ?
Damn. Now I sound spoiled? I am bitching about 2 months isn't enough and you don't get anything close to that?..I suppose that put's things in perspective. Yea, its freaking cold now. Starting salary for NYC teachers is low 50k but there are raises as well as having a union and pension. There are benefits and like you said ..2 months is pretty good, yet i am bitching about itSeasquatch wrote:No I live in Fort Lauderdale at the moment, it use to be cheap, laid back beach living but prices have went through the roof last couple years, and it just gets more and more crowded.
