Who spends more: Westerners or Chinese?

Post by Raybull »

Lately, nary a day goes by where I don't read or hear some Western foreign long term tourists or expat, businessmen included, in the KoW noting or lamenting that the Chinese tourists just don't spend any money incountry, there're mostly all here on those 'zero baht tours', as the term was coined when the crackdown in Thailand occured, staying in group hotels at cost (whatever that means, I don't think the hotels need to run at cost here in the high season). They further this by saying most Chinese businesses never help the local economy aswell. (Sorry but the Chinese have been doing a lot a business here since before frenchies ever laid foot here!).These foreigners then usually claim that they 'get around more' and thus spend more money at the local establishments (ironic as most of their preferred locales are actually foreign owned, maybe they're deceived by the fact that they are maned by Khmers, shock!). If shown proof otherwise, they retort by saying the money they spend is swiftly whisked away out of country by whatever casino they gamble and KTV they fondle at. When you mention that most of these brick and mortar establishments are actually khmer owned (barring Naga and few others), and employ multiples of locals than all western businesses combined, you get the blank eyes. Sure many Chinese, or should I say Khmer-Chinese enterprises bring in their own, ie. the online casinos, building projects, chinese oriented KTVs, but they also hire locals and thus provide employment by the thousands. I'm not particularly fond of the Chinese myself, but it's rare I see them get up to the antics that have defined westerners here since...well sonce the days of untac. Anyways, it seems most of these westerners have totally missed the boat, and are now left lamenting their fate as the eastern boys spend their money elsewhere, just out of sight of whitey and his poor business.

What's illegal about them? I do wonder why there's so many Chinese workers here though, most earning what I assume would be less than even in the mainland provinces. (Too bloody late tonite to get into it)

Chinese come in and and buy land, factories, businesses, they then pay off someone to arrange to have only their workers employed.
The workers money is remitted back to china,
The produce that the factory produces is exported tax free.back to China,Business profit is paid out in China

Zero baht tourist to thailand where on group tours, flying in on Chinese airlines, staying in Chinese owned hotels, eating in Chinese owned Restaurants, visiting Chinese owned mega Shops in Chinese owned bus's with Chinese guides. Visiting attractions/shows paying group rates. ALL PAID FOR IN CHINA BEFORE THEY LEAVE HOME, Purchases are paid using a Chinese bank card

We are getting an increasing number of Chinese tourists in. Both tour groups, smaller groups of "mates" and also families. They spend money, treat the staff with respect and are generally polite and courteous. They don't tend to go to the shacks and backpacker hangouts as they are older and more "middle class" and want a slightly classier place to spend their time in.
I've been saying for years now that the demographics are changing down here. If you can't see that as a business owner, then your business will die a slow( sometimes fast) death and you will have nothing better to do with your time then bemoan your fate on FB.

I heard gossips about the Sun Boats selling group tickets to chinese at their regular price only to discover some middle man was selling them back four times that price.

Although Siem Reap may be an exception with these types of tours, I don't think it's that cut and dry in Cambodia yet. It's really hard to gauge the percentage of Chinese that are on these types of tours though. However, most Chinese restaurants out here are owned by Khmer or Khmer-Chinese, and mostly staffed by Khmers with some Chinese in the management and greeting staff, although I have no qualms about them being Chinese owned, just like the western owned places, etc. Most tour groups in SHV stay in Khmer hotels (there's that recent article GM posted about the Golden Sands renting 200 of it's 250 rooms to Chinese tour groups), there's just not that many stand alone Chinese hotels yet. Most of the busy Casinos and KTVs are still Khmer owned and that's where the money flows for the Chinese.

when i worked for a travel mag back in 2008 in Cambodia there were already plenty of Chinese, Thai and Korean owned 4 star hotels on the main road,( hwy 6?)
can only imagine many more now
Plenty of Chinese and Korean owned restaurants as well
KTV's,casinos might be on paper owned by the Khmers but its Korean an Chinese money that built them
Chinese have an arrangement when they travel as they are ONLY allowed to exchange small amount to foreign currency.
they have a Chinese bank card and all monies are deducted from their accounts directly to pay for things

In NZ and Australia I believe that Chinese spend the most per capita. Many are independent tourists unlike the Japanese who never really broke out of that mould. In Australia they hire cars and tour the coast staying in caravan parks and going fishing. Apparently they love their children inter acting with locals at playgrounds and beaches. They are a very loud people but apart from that seem preferable to pommie lager louts, euro trash and aussie housos drinking too much and doing nasty drugs.
Kampot seems to have a worse demographic that Snooky nowadays, it that's possible.
