Discussing a strategy for Cambodia's waste management
The second national workshop on better waste management was held in the capital this week to discuss and finalize a strategy to deal with Cambodia’s less-than-effective methods of garbage disposal.
Officials from the Ministry of Environment met with the Japan-based Institute of Global Environmental Strategies (IGES) as well as the UN’s International Environmental Technology Center to discuss and finalize an action plan.
IGES researcher Ran Yagasa said yesterday that Cambodia’s challenges in dealing with waste were multifaceted and a holistic strategy was needed, particularly in the face of increasing carbon and methane emissions.
Mr. Yagasa said the country’s lack of collection services has led to the prevalent method of citizens openly burning waste to dispose of it.
This method releases black carbon, a matter that releases a much higher quantity of emissions than CO2, according to Mr. Yagasa.
To that end, education and capacity building are key features in the action plan the workshop hopes to finalize, however Mr. Yagasa said there needs to be political and societal will to affect change.
Ngethn Bol, deputy director of the ministry’s solid waste management department, confirmed that funding for the strategy had yet to be finalized. “So far we have a strategy and action plan on solid waste management, but the financial support is limited,” he said...

I don't think that burning garbage is at all prevalent any more. Sure, you see some people burning small piles of waste now and again, but most of the time that's not the case. Even outside the CINTRI pick up area, I don't see burning used so much in disposal, it's just dumped in swamps.CEOCambodiaNews wrote: Mr. Yagasa said the country’s lack of collection services has led to the prevalent method of citizens openly burning waste to dispose of it.
Sometimes vagabonds will set fire to the bags of refuse and try to extract what they can from the ashes.
Silence, exile, and cunning.

The other day at the Kampot market a skip that is usually in one place was moved about 10 metres away from its usual spot !!! So, where it is usually there is a large pile of garbage as locals to lazy and stupid to walk an extra 10 metres. Yes, the mind boggles.

Plenty of new bins noticed today. Flip lid & remove inner basket type.Only about the size of a beer fridge however. Got an idea that the locals will re-purpose these some how.

Don't give them any ideas. We are not far behind, I will only mention manhole covers for the moment.

And looks like someone has taken the hints that I have been on about. ,,,, New jumbo bins.,,, But we need a few thousand more. It's so much easier for Cintri to cart away a jumbo bin full, rather than use a fork to move stuff from a heap on the road into a garbage truck.
And what surprised me most was this is the first time I have seen a jumbo bin that is not full to overflowing

Cambodia,,,, Don't fall in love with her.
Like the spoilt child she is, she will not be happy till she destroys herself from within and breaks your heart.
